“Click it or ticket”

23) 在美國較偏僻的高速公路傍常見的一塊牌子寫著︰“Click it or ticket”，究竟是什麼意思？它是「開燈，要不然接罰單。」 click  v./ n.; 原作滴答聲响解(tick) ，現在一般指『輕按滑鼠』，a ~ on the mouse； ~ it 此處意指輕按汽車內的車燈開關 ticket 指車票、入塲券，a one-way ticket單程票。美語指交通違規單：The police will give you a ticket. (違規單) ；or= otherwise否則。

最近美國各州紛紛製訂「雨天開車必須開大車燈」的規定，否則罰款(各州罰額不一，如︰加州罰$96元)。 這是美國交通警察給駕駛人的警告-有些初到美國的駕駛者；因不諳交通規則，在某些特別路段 (如連續彎路或公路太直地段) 未在大白天，開車燈，以致被開單。

另，在美國出殯行列的車隊即使在大白天亦須全部開車燈，因行車速度太慢。 然而在某些亞洲國家，大白天開車燈或閃車燈，表示欲「超車」或罵人〕之意。本警示句 “Click it or ticket.” 中，ck-it與ket有(kIt) 之相同尾音。

“ You click.  We deliver.” 美國某超市公司廣告詞句，意謂︰

「你們僅需輕按滑鼠-(在網路上訂購)，我們即送貨。」- (顧客不必親臨

市場)：

At a click of the mouse, you will get all the information you need.

輕點滑鼠(意指瞬間)，你就可得到需要的訊息。

*ticket  n. 在美國接到~ 即citation交通違規單，台灣俗稱「紅單」。ticket另作

門票；戲票解；a ~ scalper 轉售戲票牟取暴利者- 即「黃牛」(不可直譯為Yellow

 Cow)。

若指人在約會中

黃牛(爽約)應說stand + 人+ up。

*Please do not stand me up like you did last time. 請勿像上次爽約不到。

其他類似語帶「威脅」語氣之用法：

l  Trick or treat! 美國小孩在萬聖(鬼)節 ( Halloween -每年十月卅一日) 向鄰居

們說的話意謂︰「不給糖吃，我們就惡作劇。」

= Give us treats, or we’ll play trick on you. trick v. n.欺騙；欺詐

*tricky a. 狡猾的。(treat n.糖果)

Tom was tricked out of his toys and money. Tom 被騙走了玩具和金錢。

trick n. play a ~ on + 人; 開玩笑；惡作劇；欺騙

Stop playing a trick on the poor little girl. 別再對這位可憐的小姑娘惡作劇。

**比較：gimmick n. 花招，噱頭

*The town created Ms. America in Roaring Twenties as a gimmick to prolong the 

summer tourist season. 本鎮在狂歡的20年代，創造了美國小姐選美賽作為

花招，來延長暑期的觀光季節。

下面「名詞+ or +名詞」則含「不論是……與否」之意：

The athletic meet will begin as scheduled at nine tomorrow rain or shine. (不論晴雨，運動會如期明天九點舉行。) rain or shine =whether it be rain or shine ; rain or shine 屬

相對名詞片語，通常不必加冠詞。

另例 ：Be it friend or foe, detect it closely. 無論是敵是友，都要仔細偵查。

l We are interested in how Kaddafi went from foe to ally.

我們對利比亞(Lybia)獨裁者-格達費如何從敵人變成盟友感興趣。 

*rich or poor = (whether they are) rich or poor people 無論貧富                  

*young or old = (whether they are) young or old people無論老少

*dead or alive= (whether one is or they are) dead or alive 無論死活
