3. fear n. 恐懼

He kept silent for ~ of being recognized. 他保持緘默，惟恐被認出來。

=He kept silent for ~ that he might be recognized.

(惟恐：for fear of + n/ ving；for fear that + S. +V.= lest)

Worry and suspense keeps us in ~. 煩惱與懸念使我們恐懼。

53) flash / flesh / fresh / flush: (字義毫無關連)  

1.     flash [ fl$N ] v. 閃光；閃現 (thunder 打雷)          

a. Yield when (traffic lights are) flashing.  當交通燈閃亮時，須讓車。(美國一般校車，車身背後的警告詞)

b. A strange idea ~ ed into (across) my mind. 我心中突然有個怪念頭。(指某事突然湧上來)

c. Richard Nixon ~ed his trademark “victory” sign after resignation and before leaving the White House. 尼克森(松)總統辭職後，離開白宮之前，揮動他的註冊商標“勝利”的手勢。a flashlight 手電筒 ；in a ~ = 即刻

d. A shocking cold wave plummets temperatures to levels cold enough to freeze ~in 10 minutes. 令人震驚的寒流使氣溫急速降到零下，冷得令人短短的十分鐘就凍僵。(cold wave中文譯成寒流，cold front 冷峰；而heat wave則譯成熱浪！有意思)。(另註：plummet v. 使重重落下)

2. flesh n. 肉 ；肉體 (能食用的肉叫meat)

a. Such things are more than flesh and body can bear. 這種事非人所能忍受。(flesh and body血肉之軀)

b. I saw the President in ~ and blood. 我看到總統本人，並非其相片或電視上的影像。(in cold and blood真人)

c. I am as flesh-and-blood real as you are. 本人同你一樣有血有肉。

d. Human beings are only flesh and blood. 人類不過是血肉之軀。

*e. Her skin was covered in goose flesh. 她感到肉麻。(起鷄皮疙瘩) 註：老外皮膚較粗故起鵝皮!

3. flush n. 臉紅；straight ~ 紙牌中清一色 (同花) ；

flush v. 沖洗

The radiator needs ~ ing every one hundred thousand miles. 汽車水箱每十萬哩須清洗一次。

She ~ed at the sight of the handsome young man. 一見到這位英俊的青年，她臉紅。

4. fresh  a. 新鮮的；~ air ；~ water 淡水              

a. This memory shall be kept ~. 將永遠記住此事。

b. These fruits are ~ from the orchard 這些水果剛從園裡採收。 

c. These young cops are ~ from school. 這些年輕員警是「菜鳥」。(剛從學校畢業) 

d. The U.K. ~ ideas are for those ~ out of ideas.英國的新點子送給剛剛有點子的人。 (U.K.= United Kingdom聯合王國=英國)     

54) fire /file:

1. fire vt. 解僱 = lay off , ~ + 人 (不可接事情) 。

When to hire or ~ a person is a manager’s concern. 何時僱用和解僱員工是經理關心的事。

~ V. 開火 “F~!” The platoon leader shouted at the G. I.’s  排長向大兵們大聲喊著「開始射擊！」= Open fire (G.I. = Government Issues 美國大兵)

fire n. 火災，火警。set a house on fire縱火= set fire to a house。The house is on fire. 房子着火= The house catches fire. 另外：firefighter消防隊員，fire department消防隊，fire alarm火警

2. file n. 檔案 ；文件+be on ~ 存檔 ；作動詞，提出；~ a lawsuit 提出訴訟 ；~ a bankruptcy 提出破產訴求

Anyone who feels he or she has been discriminated against may~ a complaint. (discriminate vt. 岐視)  感覺到他或她曾經受到歧視的任何人，都可以提出抱怨訴求。另註：

*complain vi. ~ to + 人 + for + 事 (向…. 抱怨)

The guest ~ed to the manager for the bad service. 客人向經理抱怨服務不佳。
