文法(grammar)與句型(sentence patterns)
32) 表示數目詞之用法有三種：
A. 定數數目詞 (不可用複數) +名詞
two hundred workers 兩佰位工人；five million dollars 五百萬元** 但，a few (several) hundred
students幾百位學生
B. 非定數名詞 (必須用複數) + of +名詞
Tens of thousands of people attend a 6 p.m. vigil at Trafalgar Square in
memory of the victims of the London transit bombings. 有好幾萬人在屈法加廣場參加晚上六點的守夜晚會，以紀念倫敦爆炸案中罹難人士。他例：
hundreds of workers 幾佰位工人；thousands of clubs 幾仟家俱樂部；millions of dollars 幾佰萬元；billions of bacteria 幾佰億病菌 trillions of pesos
in debt 幾兆披索的負債
C. tens / hundreds of +非定數名詞 (複數) + 名詞
a. tens of
thousands of demonstrators 幾萬示威者；tens
of millions of Muslims 幾仟萬回教徒
b. hundreds
of thousands of bees 幾十萬蜜蜂；hundreds
of millions of insects 幾億昆蟲**其他例詞： score 二十： four ~ and seven years ago 87年前
S~ s of civilians
were injured.幾十位平民受傷。dozen 一打：three ~
of beer 三打啤酒
Dozens of rivers
were polluted. 幾十條河流受污染。
Students came in
dozens to sign up for the campaign. 好幾十位學生報名參加此項活動 。

33)有些名詞屬於一付/一双/或一對的物品必須永遠用複數
Could you lend me a
pair of shears to trim the bushes with?
請借一把剪刀修剪灌木。
** shears n 指用於修剪花木的大剪刀；a pair of ~
比較：sheer a.全然的 (= absolute; utter) 與
shear 同音。
It is ~
nonsense 無聊透頂。 It’s ~ folly 十分愚蠢。
It’s a ~ waste of time, energy, money. 全然浪費時間，體力，金錢。

(slacks) 一條褲子 (美語)；a ~ of trousers 一條褲子 (英語)；a ~ of sun
glasses (spectacles) 一付太陽眼鏡 比較：
《reading glasses 老花眼鏡；bi-focal glasses雙焦點眼鏡；但，*〔a
magnifying glass〕 一面放大鏡》
a ~ of compasses 一付分度器 比較：a compass 一個指北針(羅盤)
a ~ of high-heeled shoes / boots/socks/stockings 一雙高跟鞋/ 長統皮鞋/短襪/ 長統襪
a ~ of scissors 一把剪刀；a ~ of
earrings 一對耳環 。但，

34) 一般可數名詞的複數形及其例外情形：
A. 以 –f 或 – fe 結尾，改- f 或- fe 為 v + es
leaf
- leaves樹葉；knife – knives小刀；wife – wives妻子midwife
–midwives助產士(產婆)
*例外：
chief – chiefs 首領； handkerchief -handkerchiefs
手帕；proof- proofs證據；roof-
roofs屋頂；safe – safes 保險箱

a sharp contrast to the blue sky and green bushes. 遠處的紅屋頂和藍色天空與綠木形成強烈對比。
B. 以-y 結尾：
a. -子音+ y, 改 y 為i + es
city-
cities城市；cry – cries 哭泣；fly - flies蒼蠅；spy
– spies 間諜
b. -母音+ y , 僅加s
toy- toys玩具；relay- relays接力；轉播
C. 以- o 結尾
i. -子音 + o 加-es
potato – potatoes 馬鈴薯；sweet ~ 蕃薯；tomato –tomatoes 蕃茄；motto – mottoes ( ~ s) 座右銘；mosquito – mosquitoes 蚊子
**例外：
embryo – embryos 胚胎；piano – pianos 鋼琴；photo – photos相片 (因photo 乃photograph
之簡稱；photographs；limo- limos (limousine大禮車)；memo 備忘錄
memos (正式用字為memorandum- memoranda) banjo – banjos (~ s) 五弦琴
ii. -母音 + o 加 s
radio – radios手音機；
bamboo – bamboos 竹子；
studio –
studios 藝術家工作之地方 含畫室、 雕刻室或攝影室；(美國)含單一 (無隔間) 臥房、餐室和起居室的房間。tattoo- tattoos刺青；cuckoo – cuckoos； 杜鵑鳥
* a cuckoo’s nest杜鵑窩 (瘋人院= asylum)
比較：* sanatorium 精神療養院；curio古玩 -curios

Literary and dramatic character is an imitation of human character.
文學與戲劇的角色，乃模仿人類的性格。
【註】同一名詞因作可數或不可數用法而有意義上的不同：
