 42) dead / deadly/ deathly:

 1. dead ：

a. ~ a. 原義為 “死亡的”

If your mistake is repeated, you will be a ~ man. 如果再犯一次錯，你就死定了。但有許多其他

引申之義：

如~ lock 僵局； the ~ hours of night 深夜；dead end 死巷，美國有些州用no outlet；在加州

用 Not a through street (此路不通) His house stands at the dead end of the lane.他的家在死巷

盡頭。

the ~  wire指斷電電線，其相對為the live wire 通電的電線，； a ~ loss 完全損失； ~line 截止

The telephone is dead. = out of order. ( not working) 電話不通 。但查号台的錄音留話，卻說：

 “The number you dialed is no longer in use. Please check and dial again.” (您撥的號碼已停用

，請查明後再撥。)

b) n.已故的the ~ (people) and the living (people) 死者(複數)與生者；*the deceased死者(可作單數；the dear departed (敬愛的亡者)。th deaed除作死者外，另作death死亡(抽像名詞) 解

比較： to rise from the dead 復活，但復活的動詞是resurrect v.，resurrection n. 而指三月底

四月初的『復活節』叫 “Esther Sunday”

c) 作adv. 用(屬口語用法) = 完全地completely；如~ asleep 熟睡；~ drunk 爛醉；~ sure 十分確信 = quite sure

2. deadly表面上看似副詞，但大都作形容詞用作「致命的」解                        

a. ~ ( = a fatal) mistake 致命的過失；~ enemy 不共戴天的敵人a ~ suicideattack  致命的自殺攻擊

a. This is the deadliest terrorist attack on British soil.這是在英國本土所發生的最致命的恐怖攻擊。deadly之比較級= deadlier，最高級為deadliest

b. They are discovering new ways to prevent and treat the deadliest disease of all. 他們正發現防止

與治療這個最嚴重疾病的新方法。

3. deathly由death變來

death n. 與其相關的慣用成語如下：

 

a. She looks as pale as ~.她臉色蒼白如死人。

b.The soldier died a heroic ~士兵壯烈犧牲。

c.The prisoner was put to death. 被處死。

d.Hearing his boring story, we felt bored to death. 聽他的故事我們很煩。

deathly a. 如死亡的；或作adv. 極端地 (= extremely)

In the Gobi Desert it is blazing hot for half the year, and ~ frigid the other half.在戈璧沙漠中，天氣

半年十分炎熱，另外半年則十分寒冷。

43) decay / decade:

1. decay v. n. (重音在第二音節) 腐敗；退化

The country’s power decayed after the war on the sea. 海戰之後，該國軍力衰退。

a ~ed tooth  一顆蛀牙

After the long period of drought, the plants began to fall into decay. 經過長期乾旱以後，植物開

始衰微。(fall into decay衰退；腐壞)

2. decade n. (重音在第一音節) = ten years 十年；

With passion lasting ~s, some artists undertake projects of the grandest scale.

帶著持續數十年的狂熱，一些藝術家從事最大規模的計劃。

* century n.百年；bi-centennial  二百年** fortnight n. 兩週

* 比較：〔deca-= 十〕decimal  n十進法，小數的

Decalogue = the Ten Commandments十誡。decathlon n.十項全能(運動項目)
