 35) cite /site / sight:

site 與 cite, sight 屬同音異義字(homonyms)：

 

1.     site n.場地 a job ~ 工作場地；missile ~ 導彈發射場

比較：“Hard Hat Area”『美國建築工地前之警告牌，警告進入工地須戴保護頭部之硬盔，

有些工地甚至要求戴眼鏡，“Hard Hat &Eye Protection Required”』。但在遠東地區有些

工地則自創： “Do not get close”作警告，這並非正式用法；請勿靠近之警示牌，應書為

「Keep out」。

2. cite v.引用 = quote 傳訊，開告發單

a. The Secretary was ~ d as having made such a statement. 部長被引用說過這句話。 

b. In his speech, he always likes to cite famous passages from Shakespeare.在他的演說中，他老喜

歡引用莎士比亞的名句。

c. Unauthorized vehicles will be cited and towed away at owner’s expense.未經許可停放的車輛會

被開告發單 (取締) 並拖吊，拖吊費由車主負擔。(這是常見私人停車場之警告牌)

d. I have cited only two examples.我僅提出兩個例子-指看不見的事

*citation n. = quotation 引用句; 傳票 (交通違規單- 俗稱 (ticket)

All unauthorized vehicles are subject to ~. 未經許可的車輛會被開罰單。

3. sight n. 看見 catch ~ of 瞥見 lose ~ of ..看不見； at first ~ 乍看之下        

They fell in love with each other at first ~. 他們一見鍾情。

know + 人by ~ 一看到…就認出來。但/ know + 人 by name 只知其名，不識其人；poor eye-~

視力不佳。near-sighted 近視；short-sighted 短視的

【Out of sight, out of mind. 】日遠日疏

《It is a sight for sore eyes. 》它是令人高興的一幕。(sore a. 疼痛的)

Set your sights on the future. 遠光要放遠。有人說：Keep your eyes on distant stars.

sight v. 看到

The land was ~ ed (= in sight) 陸地在望。

When in the Navy, my primary duty was to ~ guns. 在海軍服役時，我主要負責觀測巨砲。

36) council / counsel:

1.     council n. 與 counsel n.屬同音異義字；前者指議會、會議，是一個團體；如the City C~市議會；~man 議員。後者U.不可數名詞，作“忠告”解。另作可數名詞 (單, 複數同形) 用， 則

      作「辯護律師或法律顧問團」解 (= counselor)。另councillor n. 乃council之成員；counsellor n.= adviser顧問

      We cannot choose but turn to our counsel for advice.除了請教律師外，我們別無選擇。

注意：keep one’s own counsel 對自已的計劃保守祕密；take ~ together共同商議

2. A turn to B for + 事： A 向B 求…事

37) canyon /crayon/cannon:

1. canyon [k$njDn] n. 狹谷；the Grand C~ 美國大峽谷風景區

The Grand Canyon is famous for its breathtaking scenes. 大狹谷以其充滿刺激的景物出名。valley n. (泛揩一般) 山谷或河谷

2. crayon n. ['kreDn] 臘筆；chalk 粉筆  

We use lots of ~ s and markers to make pictures. 我們使用很多蠟筆和彩色筆來畫圖。

【Crayons and bad memories make for art and therapy.】

畫筆和痛苦的回憶，造成了藝術和治療精神痛苦的妙方。

We learned everything from ~ to perfume. 從小女孩到婷婷玉立，我們學會了一切。(crayon臘筆，代表幼兒時代；perfume香水，代表少女時代，懂得塗抹香水)

比較：

cannon n.巨(加農) 砲 (gun：除作槍外亦作巨砲解；rifle：來福槍，長槍)

canon: n.教規，標準(criterion) 規範，真本，正經

The supreme works have established a ~ of beauty that pervades Western culture to this day. 這些至

高無上的作品已建立了美的規範，它使西方文化綿亙流傳至今日。

(註：supreme a. = highest 最高的；pervade v. = spread= be prevalent 流傳)

38) coach / couch:

1. coach  n. 馬車； 教練

Former ~ Jackson gets a three-year contract but he says he doesn’t expect theLakers to turn around

overnight. 前任教練簽了一張三年的合約，可是他說未期待一夕之間，就可以把湖人隊 (洛杉

磯)改頭換面。

2. coach vt. 當….之教練   

Mr. Jackson ~ ed Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls to six titles in the 1990s. Jackson先生曾當

過喬丹和芝加哥公牛隊的教練，而在1990年代具六個頭銜。

coach n.馬車；stage ~ 驛馬車；車；~ train 客車；cargo train 貨車； night ~ 夜車

I took a night ~ from D.C. to New York 我搭乘一班自華府至紐約的夜車。a studio ~沙發與卧床

兩用

3. couch n. 長沙發bench 長板凳

He sat down on the couch, reading newspapers. 他坐在長沙發椅上讀報紙。

couch v. 措辭 (正式用語) The reply was ~ed in insolent terms. 回答措辭蠻悍。
