16) appraise /apprise:

1. appraise  vt.估價 尤指專業性不容置疑估計;appraisal n.appraiser 估價師。(evaluate-
指看不見事物)
It is difficult to appraise a new house during the booming season.在經濟繁榮時期,難以評估一間新房子的價錢。

* connoisseur (法文) 鑑賞家 (person who shows keen discrimination in fine arts-
藝術品有敏銳辦別能力者)

2. apprise vt.告知 = (inform) 
Having appraised the old vase, the antique dealer apprised its owner that it wasworth $ 500.在估價了舊花瓶後,古董商告知擁有者它值五佰元

17) assort /assert: (兩字發音接近,又都作動詞)

1. assert vt.  ~ that + 子句/ n.斷言;辯稱;n. assertion
He ~s to be innocent.= He ~s that he is innocent.他辯稱是清白的。

The Vice President ~s his global warnings in a documentary.在記錄片中,副總統主張他對全球性的警告。
Mr. Johnson asserted that he is innocent of the charges against him. Johnson 先生宣稱他是無辜的。(be innocent of .. 未犯之罪)
Brutus may attempt to ~ reason against emotion. Brutus也許企圖辯稱是出於理智對抗情感

2. assort  vt.分類 = classify~ ed biscuits分類的餅乾;~ with 協和相配 = match  
It does not ~ with his style. 它未符合其風格~ with + (人交往)    
Do not ~ (= associate) with those gangsters. 勿與幫派人士來往

比較

18) appeal / appear:

1. appeal vi.
a. 引起興趣:
Bright colors do ~ to me. 我對鮮艷顏色的確感興趣。
Do the Westerns~ to you at all? 你對西部電影感興趣嗎?

appeal n.魅力 sex appeal 性感
i. They had fallen to treachery, but there was a certain nobility about their behavior that ~ed to Eric.
他們雖然叛變,但舉手投足仍有一點高貴,它使Eric興趣。

ii. The electric decorative accessories give rooms a highly desirable “well-traveled”~.
這些電動裝飾配件,給予幾間房間具備,大家想進去走走魅力。

 n.上訴者

2. appear vi. 出現;出席 = show up= come into sight

options.” 高盛投資公司選擇故作啞口無言,而未表現精明,也許是它最糟糕選擇中最好的
選擇。(Goldman Sachs是聞名的投資公司)

b. He ~none the worse for wear. 因疲乏他看起來一樣不好。(He is worn out. 精疲力竭) (none
the worse for…. 一樣不好)

19) assent / ascent / accent /ascension:

assent ascent 屬同音異義字。先找出字源,再辦別相反詞及名詞轉成語。

  1. assent v. n. 同意
We give our ~ to the proposal.我們同意此提議。其相反詞為 dissent n. 反對

2. ascent與上字同音,n.登高;上升;其動詞為ascend(字源)

The ascent of the mountain takes us double the time we spend in descending. 上山的時間比下山
多一倍。

3. ascension n.上升 (比喻性) (ascend v. 之名詞轉成語)

His ~ to Hollywood’s top ranks was in doubt when his first big film bombed.當他首部電影搞砸
時,人們懷疑他能晉升為好來塢頂尖明星。

比較descend  v. 下山;下降; 其名詞為 descentdescendant   後裔

4. accent  n. 口音;特色;調
a. Dr. Henry Kissinger speaks English with a strong German ~ 季辛吉博士講英文有重的德國腔。

b. “Our free design service can help as much or as little as you’d like, from finding one perfect~ to
designing an entire room.”

我們免費設計服務,從為顧客找到一個完美的特色到設計整間房間,大小不拘。accentuate v. 標示一個字的重音(primary stress)accentuation n.
