文法(grammar)與句型(sentence patterns)

七. 助動詞 (Modal Auxiliary)  與詰問句 (Tag Question) :  

6)  John used to pick up some pebbles at the shore. (John 過去一向在岸邊撿些貝殼)。

1. used to+ V 表示過去一向…. = was (were) in the habit of +Ving

It ~ to be that a classically trained female musician was expected to settle

down to life with a symphony.〕

人們過去一向都期待，一位曾受古典音樂訓練過的女性音樂家，最後加入交響樂團安定下來。

2.  be  (get, become) + used to +Ving,  ( Noun) 做…已習以為常

We get used to the climate here.   我們習慣此地天氣。

We are used to being treated like distinguished guests.  我們習慣於被待之以

貴賓。

*比較：

a. We used to get up at five.  我們過去一向五點起床。

b. We were used to getting up at five.  以前我們慣於五點起床。                                     

i. As a person in a wheelchair, I was used to being the only one in the room who

was in a chair.

 因我是位長期坐輪椅的人， 過去我對於房內僅我一人坐在椅上已習以為常。

ii. Julius Caesar was used to taking big risks and winning. 凱撒大帝對於冒大險

獲勝稀鬆平常。

 iii. A lifelong performer, Teri Garr was used to fan’s applause.作為終身的演員，

Teri Garr 對於影迷 (粉絲) 的喝采習以為常。

c. Elephants are used to move logs in Thailand. 象在泰國被用於搬運木材。

 * 注意：a. b.句之 used 讀成 [ just] ；c.句讀成 [ juzd ]

                                                                             

7)  The teacher insisted that the student hand in homework by weekend. 

(老師堅持這位學生在週末前繳家課)。

 1. 若干表示 命令, 建議, 堅持, 主張等義之動詞 或名詞 用下列句型：

Vt/ N. +   that + S. + (should) + V..(主動) 

Vt/N. +    that + S. + (should) be + P.P. (被動)     

動詞：order, command,(命令) request, stipulate (規定)； suggest  , insist,

recommend (推薦)；mandate, ( 命令) etc.

名詞：:order, command, request, suggestion, recommendation,(推薦)  insistence,

 (堅持), etc.. 例

We suggest that he be sent to hospital immediately.

 =It is our suggestion that he be sent to hospital immediately. 我們建議立刻將

他送醫院。Note：

1.上句 that 引導之子句作 suggest 之受詞；下句則作名詞子句與前 suggestion

 同位格。*注意

a. suggest   vt. 若作 “提示” 或 “暗示”解時， 不必用 should + V：

Some analysts ~ ed that he was looking for explanations in wrong places.

一些分析師暗示說他在不當的地點尋找解釋。

b. suggest   vt. + n.  “使聯想起”

Hot weather ~s swimming and playing at the beach.熱天氣讓人聯想到游泳和在海邊玩耍。

2. insist 若作 “力辯” “辯解”解時， 其後所接 that 子句中，動詞可用”直說法”

(declarative mood, 直說法即簡單現在或過去時式)：

The accused person insists that he is innocent. 被告辯稱無罪。   

=The accused person insists on his innocence

The accused person insists that he did not steal the car. 被告辯稱未偷車。
