二. 代名詞 ( Pronoun)

43)  Will Dr. Burton’s name is listed in Who’s Who? 他的名字會在名人錄中?    

       

Who’s Who (= Who is who….?) 名人錄；習慣上作名詞片語用。

Upon final confirmation, you will be listed among thousands of accomplished professionals in the Who’s who.

經最後確認後，您的大名將被列入，好幾千名事業有成的專才

名人錄中。

注意：who’s = who is ；而whose (所有格) + 名詞：指「…的」 

Whose car is it? 它是誰的車子？ (whose 作人稱代名詞)

44) Cooking a meal for three of us is not difficult, there is nothing to it. (煮飯給我們三人吃是輕而易舉)。

* 下列為與nothing 連用之慣用語：  

             

a. There is ~ to it. 輕而易舉的。= It is as easy as ABC.

b. be good for ~ = be worthless 無用之才

He is good for ~, fooling around all day long. 他整天無所事事; 是無用的人。

                     

b. ~ short of 完全地; 澈底的= thoroughly

 His business in second-hand car dealership was ~ short of successful. 他做二手汽車代理商的生意十分成功。

c. for ~ = free of charge 免費

The pamphlet (brochure) is for ~  這本小冊子是免費贈送。

d. ~ doing! (口語英語-表示拒絕) = No way ！ 連門兒也沒有！不行!

e. ~ but + obj. =only 僅僅，不過：N~ (None)but a fool would believe it.只有笨瓜才會相信它。

f. anything but=決非，一點不是..

He can be anything but a beggar. 他決非乞丐。

=He is by no means a beggar. = He is not a beggar at all. = He is far from being a beggar.

《An unmannerly American once said to a famous French general

that French politeness was nothing but wind.  The general replied, “Neither is there anything but wind in a pneumatic tire, yet it eases the jolts along life’s highway.” 》

 (一位不禮貌的美國人曾經告訴一位著名法國將軍說，法國人的禮貌不過是風而已- 吹過了就沒有。法國將軍回答「一只充氣的輪胎也一樣，除了氣外甚麼都沒有，可是它能減緩人生旅途上的顛簸。」)

『註：unmannerly = impolite 不禮貌的；nothing but = only ；anything but = 絕非 ；pneumatic a.  充氣的』

g. to say~ of = let alone =not to mention遑論： There are six people in the car, to say ~ of two puppies. 車內有六個人，更不用說還有兩隻小狗。

h. think ~ of 不把…當一回事：

Joe thinks ~ of swimming 5,000 meter after running for 5miles. 跑了五哩後，再游五仟公尺，Joe未把它當一回事。

i.come to nothing = fail= without result 失敗

j.have nothing to do with= not to be the concern of 與…無關

k.next to ~ = almost nothing  幾無一物：With temperature over 104 degrees, he wore next to ~.因氣溫高過104度，他幾乎裸體。

一件美好的東西永遠使人歡愉；它的可愛會增加，而不會消失得無影無踪。

l. make nothing of…無法瞭解

m. The income is nothing near as high as we expected. 收入不及我們事先期待那麽高。

n. There is nothing for it but to file a lawsuit. 除打官司外別無他策。

o. Her success is nothing to yours. 她的成就比不上你。

p. “We have so much to do, including nothing at all.” 我們有很多事要做，包含『無所事事』。
