24) No + Ving 與No + 名詞之比較

在美國高速公路傍亦常見的另一塊牌子寫著︰「No littering. Fine:$109.00」

其義為「禁止亂扔垃圾；違者罰款$109.00。

litter n.= bits of rubbish 拉圾

*The new Moscow has a lot less litter though nothing can be done

without weather. 新莫斯科的拉圾少了許多，雖然天氣影响不無

關係。

【no + Ving】= Let there be no+ Ving  通常用在告示牌, 表示

「禁止做…」常見用法如下︰

 『No parking anytime.  Tow away at owner’s expense

『任何時間禁止泊車；拖吊費由車主支付。(這是在美國路邊常見的告示牌)

*No stopping on bridge 在橋上禁止暫停 (可能引擎未熄火)。

〔注意〕No parking 指離開駕駛座的停車；No stopping則指未離開駕駛座的“車子暫停” * Watch out for stopped vehicles. 小心提防已停下來的車輛。

(美國在公路隧道前的警告標誌)。

*No lifting (在商店) 禁止偷竊。

*No loitering. (在某些公共場所之警告語)禁止在此閒逛。

*No soliciting禁止推銷物品/招攬生意(通常貼在辦公室或住家門口。)

但, no +名詞，也表示禁止：

*〔No right (left) turn 〕禁止右(左)轉。

〔No U turn〕禁止迴轉。No turn on red 紅燈禁止右轉。(on red = on red lights

指紅燈亮時)

No way! 辦不到；不行。He is no politician.(= He is not a politician at all.) 他决非政客。

l 比較︰

There is no + Ving = It is impossible to + V.  (無法做…)

*There is no telling (knowing/ saying) if he ever found his son. 無法知道他是否找到他兒子。

*There is no denying the fact that she is a capable woman.  無法否認她是位能幹的婦女。

*There is no accounting for taste. (人各有志- 無法解釋興趣。-同台灣俚語︰有人(高)興燒酒；有人興豆腐-即各有所好。)

*There is no satisfying spoiled children. If they see moon reflected in a pail of water, they must have it.

無法滿足被寵壞的孩童們；因為他們甚至會想在水中撈月。(被寵壞的孩童會得寸進尺。)

*Unmatched luxury meets iconic style. There is no stopping you. It’s time to take their breath away. (這是獨一無二的豪華加上新形象的款式。無法阻擋你不去看。該吸引他們注意的時候了)。
