文法(grammar)與句型(sentence patterns)

. 形容詞 ( Adjective)- 形容名詞或代名詞

41) A Tokyo- bound train collided with a truck at the intersection.  (一列
開往東京的火車在平交道和一輛卡車相撞。

1. bind v. 約束;(過去式) – bound  p.p.- bound

2. binding a. 有約束力         
This contract is ~ on both parties. 這個合約對雙方有約束力。
It is lawfully ~ 它具法律約束力。比較law-abiding citizens 守法的公民    
                              
3. bound      
a. (或交通工具) be ~ for + 點; (開往; 前往)
The train is ~(= destined) for Chicago  這列火車要開往芝加哥。
 = This is a Chicago-bound train.
Where is she ~ for?  她要去何處 ? *

比較a bed/ chair -bound patient 須臥在床上 (或坐在輪椅上) 的病人

b. be ~ to + V    
i. = be certain to + V. 一定會:They are ~ to carry it out. 他們肯定會落實它。  
          
ii. = be obliged / obligated /compelled to +V 被迫;不得不
Thomas is ~ to resign. Thomas 不得不辭職。

42) Only an open-minded gentleman like Johnson can tolerate insult from his customers. 
(只有像詹森這樣心胸開闊的紳士才能容忍顧客的侮辱)

1. 形容詞  + 名詞 + ed = 形容詞 (作限制性用)

a man with an open mind = an open (broad)-minded man   心胸開闊的人
a person with a narrow mind = a narrow-minded man  心胸狹隘的人
** like-minded conservatives 想法相同的保守人士

a person who has a good (bad) temper = a good (bad; ill) –tempered person.脾氣好或
不好的人
a man who has near sight    = a near-sighted man 近視眼的人

** 比較
a short-sighted man 短視的人 the old-fashioned way  老式的方法  
                             
animals with short life  = ** short-lived animals 短命的動物  

a building with European style = a European-styled building 歐洲風格的
建築物

Burdensome rules, costly litigations and hard-nosed prosecutors are killing
U.S. companies.

令人厭煩的規定,昂貴的訴訟費用與作風強硬的檢察官正殘殺美國公司。

2. 形容詞-V-ing + 名詞.an odd-looking man 外貌奇怪的人
名詞- 形容詞  + 名詞 tax-exempt property 免課稅不動

3. 數目詞 + 名詞 + ed = 形容詞 (作限制性用)

a cat with three legs = a three-legged cat 一隻三貓

Jack who has one eye = a one-eyed Jack獨眼龍

a man who has one arm = a one-armed man 獨臂人

** a one-stop shop 僅須停一次就可全部購買齊全之商店 (貨色齊全的商店)

6-piece Mc. chicken nuggets 麥當勞六小塊炸雞*

比較
a girl who is four years old   = a  four-year-old girl    四歲的女孩 
girls who are four years old = four-year-olds.    四歲的女孩們

4. 名詞 -V- ing = 形容詞 (作限制性用)
His films have had something of an awe-inducing effect on the art world. 他的電影一直對藝術
界,多少有點引發恐懼的影響。

an awe-inducing effect…= an effect which induces awe….
