文法淺釋系列 (48)

文法淺釋系列 (48)

文法(grammar)與句型(sentence patterns)
. 形容詞 ( Adjective)- 形容名詞或代名詞

37) “It is necessary for the government to take immediate measures against the flood.”
       (政府須立刻採取防洪措施)

下列是一些用以修飾某事之形容詞,通常不能作補述用法來修飾人
essential必須的、 indispensable 不可或缺的、 needless 不必要的、 vital 很重要、very importanturgent 迫切的、 appropriate = proper  適當的、 convenient 方便的,etc. 如,
It is suitable for them to consult the manager. 他們請教經理是適當的。

* Note 經常有人寫出下列錯誤的句子:
If you are convenient, please call me at five. (X) 如果你方便的話,給我
電話;

正確說法是:
If it is convenient with you, please call me at five. (O) 但,作為限制名詞用法則可以:
a convenient time and方便的時間地點;
a suitable candidate  適當的後選人; an appropriate location 合適的地點

38) It is impossible for her to finish the job alone. (她不可能獨力完成這件事)
impossible 屬於上題所述之修飾事情之形容詞;不能修飾人;

但在下述句型則屬例外:
     *  + be + Adj. (hard; difficult; easy; possible; impossible) + to + Vt. ( Vi + 介詞)
He is hard to please. = It is hard to please him. 他難以討好。

She is impossible to dislike. 人們不可能討厭她。 = It is impossible to dislike her.
They are easy to get along with. 他們容易相處。= It is easy to get along with them.

*注意比較下列二句:

她不可能獨自完成這份工作
a. She is unlikely to finish the job alone.
b. It is impossible for her to finish the job alone.

a. 句表示此事不可能發生 = It is not likely that she finishes the job alone.
b. 句表示無能力辦到
