74) meat/ meet:

1. meat n. 肉品，pork 豬肉；beef 牛肉；venison 鹿肉；mutton羊肉； chicken

鷄肉；turkey 火鷄肉；但，dog’s meat狗 (香) 肉; horse~ 馬肉；mouse /cat/

rabbit/fish meat老鼠/猫/兔子/魚肉等

A man’s ~ may be another’s poison.  對某一人有益之物，對另一人或許有害 

( poison  n.毒藥) 另譯「甲所喜者乙未必喜歡。」

比較：

《One man’s terrorist was another’s revolutionary.》對某人是恐怖分子，對他

人則是革命軍。

The passage is full of errors as an egg is of meat. 這段文章錯誤連篇。

She could smell the succulent odor of cooking~她能聞到烹調中好吃的肉味。

2.    meet vt.

a.遇見或迎接

You will be met at the air terminal. 我會在機塲接你。

b. = satisfy 滿足; 應付; ~ a demand 要求; ~ a need; ~a goal (目標); ~ expenses 

足夠支付費用；~ one’s criteria滿足某人的標準

To meet the criteria, we have to make some improvements on it. 為了滿足這個標準，我們不得不將它加以改進。 *criterion n. 標準，(單數) criteria n. (複數)

a.     The supply does not meet the demand = The demand is greater than the 

supply. 供不應求。

《Energy demand is breathing heavily down the neck of supply.》

能源供不應求。

The supply is greater than the demand.  供過於求。

b. Global wind resources are so vast that they could easily ~ the world’s current energy needs. 

全球風力資源是如此豐富，以致可滿足目前世界能源的需要。

c. The skyscraper on the site of the World Trade Center was redesigned to ~security concerns. 

為了安全考量，這幢位於前世貿大樓舊址的摩天大樓被重新設計。

i.We met John in the face. 與John面對面相遇(照面)

《下列為一些相對的抽象名詞中間加一meet，表示兩者兼俱之義》：

Privilege ~s possibility.  既有特權又有能力。

Sophistication ~s simplicity. 傳統加單純。(既傳統又單純)

Elegance ~s exuberance. 高雅加繁茂。

Providence ~s performance. 天才加後天的表現。

【比較】：

His is a nature in which courage and caution meet. 他的個性融和了勇氣與慎重。

= His nature is one in which couragemeets caution.

meet 作vi不及物動詞： 

Their lips met. (=They kissed). 

The whole school met to her his speech. 全校聚會來聽他的演說。

They are working hard to make both ends meet.  他們辛勤工作以使生生活收支

相抵。

His charges were met with cries of anger. 他的控訴遭到人們怒吼。

比較：Angry cries met his speech. 他的演講招致聽眾怒吼。
