9)  Should the film, “War of the Worlds” not perform, it will be seen as a further sign that Hollywood is hopelessly out of touch with the American people.

(如果不同世界的戰爭這部電影未能盡到它的義務,它會被看作是一個進一步的跡象- 好萊塢已無望地和美國人脫了節)

 1. Should = If the film should…….萬一

 2. perform   vt. 演出; 作出          

a. The police should ~ heir duty to be guardians of people.  員警應做到人民保護的責任。

b. A surgeon ~ed an operation on him.  外科醫生給他動手術。 perform  vi    完成.之義務 ~ 在原句即作  vi

c. *We are judged even as we attempt to judge. (others) 既使當我們試圖裁判他人時,也會受人裁判。

3. see   vt.  ~ + as    .看作是 = regard…….as…….  = look upon…as. = view …….as………

 *** 假主動 (false active) 以主動語態代替被動的意義 (參閱動狀詞部分第7)

 The thermometer reads 105 degrees Fahrenheit.   溫度計讀起來華氏105The pan cooks well. 這個鍋好煮。


10)A plane crashed into a once-tranquil suburb, smashing houses in

its path. (一架飛機墜入一個曾經一度安靜的郊區,同時一路撞毀房屋。)

smashing= and smashed

crash  vi / vt  (猛撞) 此處應指飛機本身的力量撞進…., 故不必用被動

*The chain-reaction ~ that took three lives in 07 began with a speeding rig and

a faulty brake.

2007年發生的死了三條人命的連環撞車,起因於一台超速的

拖曳車,接著又是煞車不當。

*clash v. n. (衝突) a border ~ 邊界衝突事件

His constant ~ with co-workers caused him to be fired. 因為經常與同事衝突,導致他被炒魷魚。

*crush v. 壓碎

“We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed.  Perplexed,

but not in despair.  Persecuted, but not destroyed”

面對各方壓力,但我們未屈服。雖困惑,但不絕望。雖被迫

害,但未被毁滅。(hard pressed = pressed hardpersecute v. 迫害)

*smash   vt.  (猛擊)  The toy was ~ed to pieces.玩具被壓碎。       


11)  Every day brings terrible news that makes us fear that war is being lost. (每天傳來可怕的消息,它使我們害怕我們正打敗仗)

lose   本身可作  vt

a. ~ war  打敗仗 (win war 打嬴) ~ / gain ground 屈居 (占上風) ~/ (gain) weight  體重(增加) 減輕;~  (keep ) one’s temper 發脾氣 ( 忍住不發怒) ~ control of失去控制;~ balance 失去平; ~ track of…失去連絡;~ (keep ) one’s head 衝動;one’s head 保特鎮靜) ~ one’s mind (= be out of  one’s mind = ( be insane) 發瘋

* Our clock neither gains nor loses.    我們的鐘不快也不慢。


  b. + be losing the war  人正打敗仗。


(精選句子)

  *His eyes were falling upon her in that accusing way she was beginning to realize, which meant he didn’t appreciate her being there.

以一種指責的態度他注視著她,她正開始明白這個態度,意謂他並不領情她去了那里。
