30) side 在英文中之妙用：

I’m on your side. = I stand by you.但不等於I am by your

side.前者表示「我支援你」(我們同一國-台語)；後者表示「我在

你身邊」。

l  by one’s side 在…傍邊 “You’re by my side and we are on the

way to say,” I do.” 『你在我身邊，我們一起步上結婚之紅地毯』。

(英文歌曲 “Ave Maria” 之歌詞)

註：

“Will you ~ Mary (John) to be your lawful wife (husband)?”你願意娶Mary為妻? / 你願意嫁 John 為夫? *(上句為証婚的牧師問兩造結婚當事人的話; 習慣上，都答 “ I do” = “I will”我願意!- 有當事人甚至牧師的話還未問完，就搶答-表達十分願意)； 但有例外情形，如一方被迫婚，或鬧劇情節時，會說「I won’t」-不願意；如莎翁名劇 To Tame the Shrewd “馴悍記”中，女主角之臺詞，即是。

    

side n.一邊：on the side of….在….之一邊; 支持.. (on one’s side)

*Why do certain abilities develop on one side of the brain rather

than the other? 為何有些能力發展，在腦部的一邊而非另一邊?

*The senator wants us to be on the ~ of the government in tax policy.

參議員要我們支持政府的稅務政策。

*Who is on your ~? 誰支持你?

*She leaned toward her van’s passenger-~ window. 她斜靠箱型(麵包)

車駕駛座旁座位的窗戶。

*The bank is on your left (right) hand ~; you can’t miss it.”銀行在你左

(右)手邊，你一定找得到。

*The judge ordered both sides to submit written arguments this week

and said he would rule later.

法官命令兩造在本周呈遞書面辯論狀，然後他會裁決。

但，

*You are on the right (wrong) ~ of 50.你未達(已過) 50歲。

*Learn how to get time on your side. 學會讓時間在你這邊 (使時間

對你有利)

A take sides (= part) with B.  A偏袒B.；

live side by side with + n.與….過同樣的生活

〔笑話一則：〕       

一位學生想在英文e-mail 上寫「昨天我叔父打敗我舅父」，結果想了很久寫不出來，就去問老師，老師說「這很容易！你就寫：“Yesterday my uncle beat my uncle”，可是這位學生困惑地問：「這不等於“Yesterday my uncle beat himself”?」蓋 uncle 在英文，可當「叔父、伯父、姨丈、姑丈」等解也。其實，本句為避免混淆，應區分叔父與舅父：

《Yesterday my uncle on father’s side beat my uncle on mother’s side 》

父親這邊的uncle打敗了母親那邊的uncle. 雖然嚕囌，但意思交

代清楚。

或：Yesterday my paternal uncle beat my maternal uncle.

註：

paternal= of, like father父系的 ; maternal=of, like mother 母系的
