a.
物質名詞是不可數名詞 (Uncountable) ，不可加冠詞或複數形， 其前面應加一單位詞：
a bowl
of rice 一碗飯；a pound
/ ounce of sugar一磅 (啢) 糖；a pack
of cigarette 一包香煙；a
cup
of coffee, tea 一杯咖啡，茶；a glass of water,
milk一玻璃杯水，牛奶；a slice
of lemon 一
片檸檬 ；a piece (sheet)
of paper一張紙；a loaf
of bread 一條麵包；a piece of bread/chalk/cake
一片麵包/(枝)粉筆/蛋糕
比較：《
loaf v. 奔波；流浪We
loaf for loaves. 我們為生活奔波。》
a mouthful
of food 一口滿嘴食物；a pocketful
of miracles 許多錦囊妙計；a handful of log
一手臂的木頭；a handful of
miles 若干哩a bar
of soap 一塊肥皂(但，a candy bar一根棒棒糖；一根棉花棒，不可說a bar of cotton，應說a cotton swab)
b. 一些物質名詞若加了冠詞或成複數形，則具其他意義。
No one likes Eric for he always likes to speak with
an air of importance. 沒有人喜歡他，因為他總
是喜歡帶著了不起的姿態說話。
此處 an air = a gesture or attitude 姿勢；態度。另如：
The combination of
keeping his opinions to himself, and yet being influential gave Dick Cheney an ~ of mystery.
將自己看法深藏不露，加上有影響力給Cheney(前副總統) 一種神祕的姿態。
“What the
air can’t see, the air can’t touch.” (汽車廣告): 空氣看不到的東西，它無法碰觸它。此處air 前加the 表示「從車外進入的空氣」
但
The President is on air now. 總統正廣播中。
Please bring me
today’s papers. 請給我今天的報紙。
“Still waters run deep.”靜水深流。—喻「大智若愚。」; waters 作 “流動水域”解
“Do not fish in troubled
waters.”『勿趁火打劫』 troubled waters：遭遇麻煩的地方。
但”Bridge
over troubled water”- the Beatles. (英國披頭合唱團名曲中的歌詞)water此處僅指溪水
，故不加s，但也比喻為困境。
