12) accident /incident/ occident:

以上三字屬同一suffix字根，-cident，其後加al 成為形容詞

1.     accident n.意外事件， ~ ally adv. = by accident.意外地 (相反的片語為on purpose故意地=

purposely)

He slipped on the floor quite by ~ 他意外地滑倒在地上。

2. incident n. 偶發事件

The Jen Bao Dao border ~ occurred in 1969.  中俄珍寶島邊界的偶發事件發生於 1969年。

~ al a.，~ ally adv. = by the way 順便提一下； 通常用於承上接下語

Incidentally, do you have any plan on moving to New York? 且說，你有打算搬去紐約?

比較：incidence n. 範圍，發生率，事例：the ~ of osteoporosis骨質疏鬆症的發生率；for

incidence = for example例如：

Let’s take his education background for ~.就以他的教育背景為例。

coincidence n.巧合事件；

*What a ~! 真是巧合! 但，What a surprise!真想不到! 稀客！(罕見；罕走-台語)
*It was no ~! 事先安排的(不是巧合)

coincident a.同時發生的；coincidental a. 巧合性的。這些字全由動詞

coincide 轉成，其後常加 ~with 與…. 同時發生/一致/符合 

The blasts in London were apparently timed to coincide with the first full working day of a summit

in Scotland.

倫敦的爆炸案明顯被事先安排- 湊巧與在蘇格蘭舉行的各國高峰會繁忙的首日同時發生。

2.     occident n.日落；西方; ~al 西方的 (歐美)，Occidental College 美國一所普通大學名稱，

位於加州Pasadena市東邊(近Azusa)。但據稱美國總統Barrack Obama曾在此就讀，後轉入

Harvard大學。另佛教大師星雲在美國聖第牙哥市設一佛寺，名謂西方寺，在LA的Hacienda

Heights則叫西來寺。

occidental = western 其相對字為 orient; 通常用 the Orient (the East)東方; Oriental a. n.

比較：宜注意以上本題三字併音和發音之不同。

13) allusion / illusion/delusion: 左列三字尾相同-sion，意義極接近

1.     illusion [0'luIDn] n. = a mistaken idea 幻想或判斷錯誤                                           

a.      In spite of evidence, he clings to ~ s. 不管證據如何，他還是執迷不誤。

b.  He has the ~ that she loves him 他自以為她愛他。 (其實不)

c.      A mirage is an ~.空中樓閣是一種幻想。

* Lasting ~ s dot the desert near a Death Valley ghost town.持續的幻想使靠近死亡谷的鬼城

沙漠黑影憧憧。

【比較】：

* hallucination n. 幻覺；schizophrenia 精神燥鬱症

2.     allusion  n.間接提及；暗示

a.      She made an ~ to his misconduct.她暗指他行為不當。

b. Don’t make any personal allusions. 別暗指任何個人私事。

*其動詞為allude=refer indirectly暗示，~ to +受詞，指間接地mention(提及):

It might be inappropriate to allude to his dishonored discharge from the Navy.暗指他不光榮地從海軍退役也許是不適當的。

3.delusion迷惑或欺騙，由動詞delude v. (mislead or deceive). 轉成

The poor man had a ~ that he was related to the King. 這位可憐虫幻想他是國王的親戚。

We must not delude him into believing this invented story. 我們不該騙他相信這個虛構的故事。(invented=made-up杜撰的，瞎掰的)
