Where the Boys Are

上兩周已欣賞過了兩位男生動聽的歌曲，本周也該聽聽女生感情的『柔和呼喚』。

本歌約於1960年推出，由Connie Francis主唱，是電影的主題曲(片名與曲名相同)，其主題在探索(explore) 美國當年大學年輕人的sexuality(性)，與正在改變的『性』道德觀與態度(sexual morals & attitude) 。主要以teenagers (年青人) 向大眾訴求，其背景為佛羅里達州暖和的陽光、海灘與愛情故事為主(sun, sand & romance) 。本曲配合Connie所演的電影，實際上劇情與歌詞均與Connie有關。

【註】

1.     where S +V…, 主要句子，為一個句型。他例：Where there is hope, there is life. 有希望之處就有生命。Where there is a will, there is a way. (有意志之處，就有出路-喻『有志者事竟成』。)

2.     A smiling face, a warm embrace. 其前省略(someone with=具有….. .的某人

3.     Two arms to….(=Two arms which are to…)

4.     I will find….. in the crowd of …..people. in the crowd of…作地方副詞為加重語氣，而置於句首

5.     Valentine = a sweetheart chosen or complimented on Saint Valentine’s Day在情人節被選出或讚美的『情人』valentine與mine押韻， (down與town押韻) ，People與steeple押韻

6.     holds me = embrace /hug me

【評論】:

1.     本曲為少女思春曲，尤其它代表多數外貌普通的(mediocre)少女，包括Connie Francis本人

2.     Connie的曲風(style)，擅長慢四步的blues，詞中有許多具長母音或双母字，如where the boys are…，me, be.. ；valentine, mine等更顯出本由之抒情、緩慢與女性的柔和(feminine tenderness) 感情

3.     全曲用了where the boys are.. 共達八次之多。其中連續三遍的共用了兩次。在三次中，音調逐漸升高….. ，意涵强調『本人相貌雖非出眾(unattractive)，但還是有男生會等我，會愛我的』，無形中給予其他少女安慰與鼓勵她們勿『妄自菲薄，要走出來，走去有男生眾多的地方….』。\

4.     I’ll wait impatiently till he holds me… impatiently–一字露骨地在心中表示『急切渴望』男生的愛…

5.     Connie 唱腔略帶無奈，但又有信心，且具女性的『西奶 氣 (撒嬌) 』的音調，未見其人，僅聞其聲，很少男生不會被其獨特的温馴唱腔所感動。一般男生還是喜歡tender ladies，『赤查某』-凶巴巴的tough girls 會被敬而遠之。

【回憶從前台大男生對女生心態的描寫：一年(大一) 驕-proud ，二年(大二) 傲- arrogant，三年(大三) 拉警報-alert，四年(大四) 沒人要-(無人問津) -passed by? 出國去吧! Just go abroad, going to where the boys are……. 】。
