29) content /contentment/ container:

以上兩字均由 contain  (v. 包含) 變來

1.     content n. 內容 (物)；contents n.目次  table of ~s目次表；~ 滿足

People sing and dance to their hearts’ ~ to celebrate the victory. 人們載歌載

舞慶祝勝利。

~ a. 滿足的，be ~with what one has滿足自己所有。~ 滿足

*contentment n. 滿足。

Happiness consists in self-~ment. 知足常樂。

2. container n. 貨櫃 (運輸) = big can

a. International trade now relies on the seamless delivery of goods via shipping ~ s.

國際貿易現在靠貨櫃完整地運送貨物。(seamless a. 無縫合的)

b. A United States Customs and Border protection officer checks a ~ for radiation

at the port. 美國海關邊防官在口檢查一隻貨櫃是否含放射性物質。

30) cover / coverage / covering:

1. cover n. 覆蓋物; 外皮; 封面；a ~ story 封面故事；from ~ to ~ 整本書；

被單；under ~ 被掩護：

The secret agent under ~ was arrested. 隱藏的間諜被捕。

the ~ sheet (傳真的) 封面；比較：protective weather wrap 保護報紙的塑膠套。

The sergeant told soldiers to take ~.  班長叫士兵們就地掩護。

cover v. 包含；報導

a. His income can ~ his monthly mortgage payment. 他的收入可以付得起每月

的貸款償還額。

b. The report ~s the whole story of the homicide. 這篇新聞報導了整個凶殺案

的詳情。

c. Your insurance does not cover the cost of CT scan and MRI. 你的保險並未包含斷層

掃瞄與MRI.

2. coverage n. 取材 (包涵) 範圍； (電視、廣播、新聞) 報導 ；適用

a. His ~ of the king’s state visit to Russia is interesting. 他有關國王赴蘇俄正式

(國是) 訪問的報導令人感興趣。

b. The coverage of the election on TV made some people change their minds.

電視上有關選舉的報導使一些人改變他們的主意。

c.The LA Times boasts of its undefeated ~. 洛杉磯時報誇口，它的新聞報導

一直居龍頭地位-「未被擊敗」。

3. covering n. 覆蓋物，外皮

26) 修飾形容詞的特殊副詞：

Left much alone, I found it hard to spend the holiday. (孤伶伶一個人，我發覺難以度過這假日)。

1. Left much alone,= (As I was) left much alone；leave + 人 + alone  (讓…人獨處; 不去惹…) 註：alone作形容詞用，不可用very alone.

2. 與 alike 同，應用 much  但，可以說：very lonely (lonesome) 很寂寞

比較：a. The two sisters look much alike.

      b. The one look very like the other.

      a. She is much afraid.

      b. She is much frightened

      c. It is a very frightening story.

27) all + n. + long = the whole + n. 作adv. 片語用 ：

Beautiful music is played all weekend long. (整個週末都播放悅耳的音樂。)

all day long = the whole day  整天；all weekend long = the whole weekend整周末         

但，「整年」須說 ： all the year round = the whole year= throughout the year

28) simply (絕對地; 非常地) adv. ; 原屬口語, 但現已用於written English 中。

               

a. 用於肯定句時， 可置於動詞之前或後：

They ~ told us what had happened.  他們僅告訴我們已發生的事。

He is ~ being fantastic. 他簡直太棒了。

S~ the best    絕對是上等貨。= Tbe bset or nothing. (賓士汽車廣告)

b.若用於否定句時, 則大都置於動詞或助動詞之前：

She ~ isn’t the person we want.   她不是我們要的人。

He ~ didn’t respond to my call.   他就是不回我電話。

We simply cannot understand why he left so early. (我們簡直不懂他為何這麼早離開。)

*比較  ~ ly + not  之常見之簡答句用法：

 Will he settle down for less?    他會賣便宜一點嗎?

Certainly. 肯定會，~ not ! 肯定不會  (但， not exactly 不完全是 = not precisely ) Of course. 當然會，~ not !  當然不會； Absolutely.  絕對會 ， ~ not !  絕對不會；Definitely 肯定會 ，~ not !  肯定不會

48) nothing 在慣用語中時常出現的漂亮用法：

*His business in second-hand car dealership was nothing short of successful. 他做二手汽車代理商的生意十分成功。(~ short of 完全地/絲毫不差地；澈底的= thoroughly) 其他片語：

a. There is ~ to it. 輕而易舉的。

Cooking a meal for three of us is not difficult, there is nothing to it. 煮飯給我們三人吃是輕而易舉 (=as easy as 123)。

b. be good for ~ = be worthless 無用之才

He is good for ~, fooling around all day long. 他整天無所事事; 是無用的人。

c. for ~ = free of charge 免費

The pamphlet (brochure) is for ~. 這本小冊子是免費贈送。

d. N. ~ doing! (口語英語) = No way ！ 連門兒也沒有！不行!

e.  ~ but + obj. =only 僅僅，不過

N~ but a fool would believe it.只有笨瓜才會相信它。

f. to say~ of = let alone =not to mention遑論 (詳前say, talk,speak,tell 用法區別)

g. think ~ of 不把…當一回事

Joe thinks ~ of swimming 5,000 meter after running for 5miles.跑了五哩後，再遊五仟公尺，Joe未把它當一回事。

h. next to ~ = almost nothing 幾無一物：

With temperature over 104 degrees, he wore next to ~.因氣溫高過104度，他幾乎裸體。

49) late 的不同解釋：

 *A late decision, a lasting anguish. 一個晚做的決定就是一輩子的痛苦。(勸人當機立斷，早作決定) late 有不同之解釋：

1. late adj. 遲的、晚的             

*Mary is an early riser, while her brother is a late one.  Mary 是早起者，而弟弟則是晚起者。

*A 2 % ~ charge will be added to the bill. 百分之二晚繳的罰金將併入帳單。a ~ comer 晚到者；an early bird 早到者。

              

2.*late可作“已故的” 解the ~ president = the deceased president ；若指前任，則應用 ex-noun。

*John was once warmly received by the late President, Richard Nixon.  John曾經受已故總統尼克森盛情接待例 ：

his ex-wife 前妻 ex-husband 前夫 ex-mayor 前市長；今日美語一提到one’s ex, 聽話者就明白

是wife 或husband * Note:

在Rotary Club (扶輪社)中，把前一任社長稱為 past president

(P.P. +姓氏) 如：P.P. Williams 威廉前社長；C.P. (Charter

President) 則為「創社社長」

買完雞蛋要做的事   每次購買雞蛋 先以清水加入食鹽將蛋放入水中浸泡 3~5分鐘  輕輕搓揉蛋殼表面 以清水沖淨  晾乾後放入冰箱存放 ... 我的同事他丈人是開養雞場的， 經營著蛋雞的生意。 在某個場合中，    我同事告訴大家以下的故事，聽得大家目瞪口呆。  先撇開素 不素的問題，我在這兒轉述一次，  大家再考慮一下還要不要繼續吃蛋。  你們知道雞的甚麼地方最 髒嗎？我同事問大家。     「脖子？」「雞爪？」    「都不是。」我同事 笑咪咪 的搖著頭。    「是雞屁股。你們有沒有人專愛吃雞屁股的呀？！」  大家你看我 我看你，露出不解的表情。  雞的肛門附近組織充滿了大大小小的腺體，  「身體各類的穢物毒素都在這些腺體囤積。」  我同事慢條斯理 的說著。          「同時，雞的肛門含有非常高密度的大腸桿菌，  當然，隨著蛋生出來，這些大腸桿菌就轉而密 佈 在蛋殼上。」   「這也是為何大家一再! 強! 調蛋要熟食 的原因。」我同事補充。    「可是這些含著高密度大腸桿菌的雞蛋，  整齊排列在家中的冰箱時馬上污染了其它的蔬果及 置蛋架 ，  還有蛋殼表面未先清洗，直接把蛋殼打破進入煎鍋，  特別是一些大家普遍在生食的食物。」     「你的丈人難道不吃蛋？」終於，人群中有人打破了沉默。 「不吃，他們作了那麼久的雞蛋生意，自己從不吃蛋。」 我同事說。    現場一片沉寂。只 聽過種瓜 的不吃瓜，    種蓮霧的不吃蓮霧，現在又來 了個養蛋 雞的不吃蛋。 !   我同事接著說：  「經過兩年的摧殘，當這些蛋雞生到不能生時， 一隻 隻枯槁乾癟，便以一隻十元的代價 賣給加肥場， 餵 以類固醇飼料。短短一星期， 雞隻便肥大壯碩，肉質鬆軟，    再以每隻一百至 一百五的暴利賣給 這些作香雞排的加工廠。 這就是你們吃的酥脆、鬆軟的香雞排。」    現場出現了一陣驚嘆作嘔的騷動。   「我們全家從來不吃雞蛋和香雞排。」我同事又強調了一次。  所以，下次吃蛋前，請再考慮一下，務必把蛋殼沖洗乾淨。  如果你的朋友有喜歡吃香雞排的， 也別忘了把這個故事告訴他。    花點時間看看吧！ 若是可能，就轉給朋友，    台灣現在每九分鐘就有一人被宣佈 罹患癌症，   不是沒有道理的！
