17) comparable / comparative:

comparable / comparative二字均由 compare v. (比較) 變來：

a. ~ A to B  把A 比成B：

Life is often ~ d to a sea voyage.  人生常被比喻成航海。

 b. ~ A with B: A 與 B 相比： (今日美語常用to)

 i. C~ d with a tornado, this is a minor windstorm. 與龍捲風相比，這是一場

小暴風。                                                                         

ii. To the eye of the 16^th century artist John White, the natives of North Carolina

were in superb health ~ d with poorly nourished Europeans of the time.

十六世紀藝術家John White 親眼看到的北卡羅來那州的土著們，與當時

營養不良的歐洲人比起來是十分健康的。

  

1.      comparative  adj.比較的 ；相當的He lives in ~ luxury. 他過著相當奢

侈的生活。

“hotter” is the comparative degree of “hot”. “hotter” 是 “hot” 的比較級。               

~ ly (adv.):

Some experts say oil is a bargain- especially in America, where fuel prices

are ~ cheap. 有些專家說石油是廉價品，特別是在美國，油價相對地便宜。

2. comparable adj.

~ with = n. 和…有類似之處 ： ~ to + n. 可與…相比 (匹敵) ：

a.     An airplane is ~ to a bird. 飛機可與鳥相比。

b.     His work is ~ to mine. 他的作品可和我的匹敵。

c.       ~ sales price 可比較的售價- 合理的價格

compatible a. 能相容的 (getting along well together) ，一致的 (coexistent with)

，例如在新社區內所有房子都是compatible；中間若存一老舊屋子即

以上兩字均由同一動詞compete  v. (競爭)轉成：

1. competitive a. 競爭性的 (指事情；考試)

爐台外觀美麗價格又便宜。(* sensible = reasonable = competitive)

2. competent a. 能勝任的；有資格的 (= qualified) (指人) ；~ employee員工
