desire  n. v. 渴望

a. George has a strong ~ to learn a second foreign language. 喬治有學習第二外國語

的強烈慾望。比較：

When it comes to this urge, it is remarkable how history repeats itself.

1. desirous  a. 渴望的；人be ~ of + Ving，其所修飾主詞必須是人。

2. desirable a.合意的；值得渴望的 (指事情) 常見用法：

a. It is ~ that the teacher pay attention to each individual student. 最好是老師能照顧

到每一位學生。

b. It takes time to find a most ~ home in the unique neighborhood. 真須花點時間才能在

這個獨特的社區內找到一間合意的房子。

3. desired a. 被要求的 (指事情)

It is ~d that the patient follow the doctor’s instruction. 病人須遵照醫師指示。

45) destiny / destination:

1. destine  vt. 註定 (通常用被動) be ~ d to + V：

Children without siblings are not ~ d to be selfish, spoiled or lonely. With mindful

parenting they are likely to thrive. 沒有兄弟姊妹的孩子並不註定會自私，被寵壞

或孤單; 若有父母的關心，他們也可能茁壯。

destiny [ 'dGstDn0 ] n. 命運；主宰 “You are my ~; you are my dream come true…”

A fatalist is one who always resigns himself to his own destiny. 一位宿命論者總是

聽天由命。

         

2. ~ v. 動身前往或註定 ： be ~ d (bound) for + 地點 / 註定做.. ：

似乎天生幾乎未註定會成大器。

            Due   Due  to heavy fog, we were three hours behind schedule when we arrived at our ~.
