二. 形容詞 ( Adjective)- 形容名詞或代名詞

16)  This medicine is for external use; that one is for oral use. 這藥是外用；那藥是口服的。

1.     external  外面的； 外部的；~ use  外用的 (藥) 其相對字是 oral 口腔的 ; oral medication (口服藥)；for ~ use  (口服用)  ；~exam 口試

2. internal 內部的； ~ medicine 內科

The computer detects ~ fault in itself.電腦查出其本身有錯誤。

【比較】：intern v. n.實習 (醫) 生；extern v. n. (不住里面的) 實習 (醫) 生；IRS (= Internal Revenue Service 美國國稅局)

Note：除上列兩字外， 下列形容詞僅作限制性用法 (用在名詞前)：

inner內部的 ~ circle  權利圈內人。

It is a sign of inner conflict and confidence. 它是內心衝突與信心的跡象。

outer外部的 ；outer appearance 外表；外貌。

* 慣用片語：

For solitude and sand, try Inner Mongolia. 若想獨處和去沙漠， 試試去內蒙古體驗。 (Outer Mongolia 外蒙)

outer wear 外衣 (指夾克-jacket；外套；overcoat 大衣；raincoat雨衣等)

l 內衣褲, 不可說inner wear；應說 underwear (不可數名詞)

upper 上面的 lower 下面的 (a double-deck bed 双層床；the upper deck

上層床，the lower deck下層床。the upper lip上嘴唇，the lower lip

下嘴唇)

interior design  室內設計 ，exterior wall 外壁；~ painting  外漆；ministry of interior 內政部 = ministry of internal affairs                        

the external world  外在(凡俗) 世界，但the spiritual  world  精神世界

*比較：表達事物之內、外亦可用inside，outside：

Fill in your room with furniture that is beautiful on the outside and the inside. 把裡、外都漂亮的傢俱填滿您的房間。                                                                     

 **注意：中文「內在美」不可說：inner beauty 應說：spiritual  beauty「外在美」不可說：outer beauty 應說：physical beauty  

                                                                     

17) The meat of a trout is superior to that of a salmon in quality. (鱒魚肉的品質比鮭魚肉優越)。

superior ：

1. be ~ to (= be better than…) 比…優越 ； 注意： to 作介詞用，後須接受詞，不可接 than。~ officer 上司

我們種類繁多的款式與優越的服務，含免費的設計專長使我們做到盡善盡美。

2. ~之相反詞為 inferior； be ~ to …= be worse than … (比…低劣…)

 **亦作限制用法： inferior + n. 下層的；下部的

The ~ region is 15 % wider than normal. 下層這一塊比正常的寬百分之十五。                    

3. that of a salmon  = the meat of a salmon  ；** Note:

superior / inferior 已經含有比較意義，不可再加  more  另其名詞為

superiority ， ~ complex 優越感/自傲情結；inferiority ， ~  complex 自卑感

4. 其他意義：

superior: 傲慢的。He said with a ~ air. 他傲慢地說。

較優越者。McArthur has no ~as a general. (無出其右之將軍)      They are ~ in numbers. (數目較多)

卓越的。a boy of ~ intelligence智力高的男孩

不屈服於。We must rise ~ to temptation. (誘惑)

inferior:  感自卑的。Her shabby clothes make her feel ~ 她的破衣服使她感自卑。
