二. 形容詞 ( Adjective)- 形容名詞或代名詞

6)     Albert Einstein is as great a scientist as ever lived. (愛恩思坦是稀有的偉大科學家之一)。

1.     以上第一個 as 是adverb ，修飾後面的形容詞，第二個 as 是關係代名詞=who 代替前面的前述詞，同時作兩子句之連接詞。

本句  = Albert Einstein is one of the greatest scientists that ever lived.

2.     比較本句型與代名詞部份.as….as…之差別 (參閱代名詞部分) 

as+ adj. + 冠詞 + n. + as +ever + pt. (過去式)

《The whole world is engaged in searching for happiness, but judging

by appearances, very few succeed in their search.  Some expect to find

it in money, some in fame, some in the gratification of their ambition, in

the attainment of a certain position or object, but, when they get the thing

that was going to make them happy, they find happiness just as far as ever. 》

全世界的人都在忙著尋找幸福，但，就外表看，很少人找到。一些人期望在名、利、野心的滿足、或地位、目的的得到上找到。可是當他們獲得將使他們快樂的東西時，卻發現幸福還是同從前一樣遙遠。

(註：engaged in searching忙著尋找；judging by appearances, = if we judge

by appearances；the gratification of their ambition野心的滿足；attainment

達到；as far ever = as far as it ever was)

9) 倍數的比較：

*若純指「和….一樣多、大、小、高、深…等」的倍數比較的說法可用：

a. 倍數+ as + adj. + as + 子句 (half 半倍；one and a half一倍半；twice兩倍； three times 三倍…)

This river is twice as long as that one. 或This river is double the length of that one.

b. 倍數+ (double, three times..) + the +抽象名詞 + of + noun*

注意 ：名詞與相對之形容詞：

three times the amount of =three times as much as…. 三倍的數量 (= triple，例：T~Whopper 三倍大的漢堡；whopper 特大號)

double the number of ….= twice as many as…兩倍的數目。

美國名牌洗衣粉(精)-「汰漬-Tide」廣告：

“Tide has twice the fighting power in every drop. 每滴Tide洗衣精具雙倍去汚力。

four times the size of …= four times as big (large) as…四倍大

double the height (altitude) of = twice as high (tall) as 兩倍的高度

six times the depth (width, breadth) of 六倍深、寬、厚

= six times as deep (wide, bread) as… 

*At 6’4”, 220 pounds, Bob is a formidable man. But he is no match for

something one-millionth his size, - a clot.

雖然Bob 身高6呎4吋，是位壯碩的人，卻敵不過只有他百萬分

之一大小的小血塊阻塞。

(註：one millionth his size = one millionth as large as he is百萬分之一大小；no

match for …非…之對手)

但，如不強調與他人比較，可以用「數目+fold」：

《China has grown tenfold in the past 30 years, and the revised data leapfrogged

it ahead of Germany. But overtaking the United States is another matter.》

過去30年來，中國已經成長了10倍，且已修正的資料顯示，已大幅超越

德國。但要趕上美國又是另外一件事。
