台灣俗語的智慧(7)

下列為12生肖以外與動物相關的俗語

1)    古井水蛙 (井底之蛙)

直譯：frogs in a well

意譯：“totally ignorant people” 比喻為無知的人

2) 水清魚現

直譯：In clear water, fish can be seen

意譯：Everything is clear or transparent. (透明的) 或When everything clears up, truth emerges. (出現). 當一切清楚、明朗時，實情就出現。

3) 目虱吃客

直譯：a louse only bites visitors/guests (not the host)

意譯： a host taking advantage of a guest主人佔客人的便宜(當主人接受客人招待時所說的客氣話)

4) 牽亀落甕

直譯：leading a turtle into a deep urn or a container (容器) to get it trapped and become helpless(使它受困) (urn n. 甕-高而深的容器，也可裝骨灰)

意譯：setting someone up設計陷害他人或使人蒙受損失 (set+人up: 陷害)

5) 頭壳生虱母

直譯：There are lice in the hair.

意譯：someone feeling troubled or in a predicament. (困境)

6) 田螺盡肉吐

直譯：When a field snail is eaten, it is the whole.  (snail n指蝸牛，但也可用以指田間的小田螺。小田螺都整隻被食用)

意譯：(全部付出)

sacrificing everything(mostly money) for children or someone；non-reservedly (為子女或某人毫無保留地付出) (sacrifice v. 犧牲; reserve v. 保留)

7) 無魚，蝦嘛好

直譯：Without fish, shrimps are OK.

意譯：聊勝於無-Something is better than nothing.

8) 狗咬鐵灯火

直譯：a dog biting a scorching nail. (scorch v. 灼熟)

意譯：(嘸甘放)不放棄所得之物-unwilling to abandon what one has got, holding stubbornly on to it

(unwilling a. 不願的；stubborn a. 倔强的；hold on to +物 緊握)
