55) flow /flew/ flaw:

1. flow [flo ] vi. 流水；流入(指資金) 屬規則動詞 flowed ,flowed

a. F~ing gently into the river is the brook. 小溪緩慢地流入大河。本句是倒裝句，

原句= The brook is flowing gently into the river.

b. Billions of dollars in assets have ~ed into personal trusts.

好幾十億資產的金錢已流入個人信託。(asset 資產)

c.     A vast amount of capital ~ s into the market of real estate. 大量

資金流入房地產市場。

d.    Residents’ anger is ~ ing more freely than ever before.

民怒比從前更厲害。(以上b.c.d. 句中之flow均指看不見的流入)

下列兩例句中之flow作名詞用：

a.     The investment generated more cash ~ than expected. 投資所獲現金回收比預期多。(cash flow乃慣用語)

b.     Vehicle drivers must follow traffic ~ on freeways. 在高速公路

行駛時，駕駛員必須跟隨交通流動。 (traffic~ 慣用語)   

                                    

2. flaw  n.缺陷；~ed有缺陷的；~less = impeccable 無暇

疵的；完美的

a. The flawless diamonds provide a discreet sparkle. 全美的鑽石閃爍發亮著。 

(discreet a. 顧慮周到的，謹慎的)

b. It is difficult to write about Richard Nixon, who combined brilliance,

patriotism and courage with self-destructive flaws as in a Greek tragedy.

要著述描寫尼克森總統是不易的，因他兼俱聰明、愛國、勇氣

與如希臘悲劇中自我毀滅的缺陷。

3. fly vi. 飛   flew  flown    

These birds can fly over ten hours without resting. 這些鳥可以

連續飛行十小時以上。

Time is fun when you’re having flies. 當你坐飛機飛行時，是

好玩的。

fly vt. The children are ~ ing kites on the lawn. 孩子們在草地上

放風箏。

fly n.蒼蠅 ；~ball高飛球(棒球)；on the ~ = in a hurry匆忙的；

* flier = flyer n. 廣告傳單

56) flatter / flutter:

1.    flatter : v. 奉承，諂媚 = fawn upon ；本字常用於口語

2.    例如，他人誇獎你：

“You ‘re the nicest guy I ever met.” 你是我見過最好的人。或

“This is a beautiful one-piece you’ve on.” 你穿的洋裝很漂亮。

當然你可以答說：

”Thank you.”或 “I am ~ ed.”或 “You are ~ ing me.” (過獎了)。

(那裡? 那裡?) 這是客氣的答覆。

中國人以謙虛聞名，常以「那裡? 那裡?」答覆別人的致謝或

讚美等；但卻不宜以其直譯為“Where? Where?” 

「笑話一則」：

二次大戰期間，美國退休空軍陳納德將軍曾率美國志願空軍來華助戰，

一時國內軍中翻譯官奇缺，除聘用各大學外(英)文系畢業生外，國民政府

急徵調大學在學外(英)文系學生「濫竽充數」，當然良莠不齊，笑話百出。

在昆明某一美軍軍官曾應邀赴一中國軍官家中作客，一進門老美見了中國

人的太太直說：”Your wife is very beautiful!” (嫂夫人很漂亮！-有意吃老中

的豆腐)透過隨行翻譯官得知老美意思後，老中自然答：「那裡? 那裡?」

，這下可難倒了翻譯官，(中國抗戰期間國內英語水準普遍不高) 不知如何

翻譯，情急之下只得直接說：”Where? Where?” 聽了此句後，老美頓感

困惑，心想：當誇獎他人漂亮時，怎會「有人問那漂亮?」，老美疑惑地答：”Everywhere, everywhere!”「每一個地方都漂亮！」，這時老中不領情

反而對老美怒目而視，大聲吆喝道：「你何以知道？」“How do You know?”!

flatter： vt 諂媚；奉承

flattery n. 《When his ~ failed him, he used power》. 當軟的不奏效，他就來硬

的。

exaggerate vt. 誇大其詞。You are exaggerating. 那裡，可裡。You are flattering me. 

(要加me)

以上二句均為答復別人讚美的謙辭。

(注意)：kiss someone’s ass作”曲意巴結”解-屬俚語，等於台語-「捧人的LP」，

英語用kiss更絕，因ass乃動物之肛門。故不宜用於正式用法。

2. flutter: vi /vt = flap, wave 拍動，鼓翼

a. The bird was shot, dropped to the ground and its wings ~ ing, died. 鳥兒被射中，

掉到地上，翅膀振動一下就死了。

b.    The soldiers tried very hard to dominate the mountain top, ~ing

Stars and Stripes.士兵奮力佔領了山頭，並揮動美國國。
