九、 主詞與動詞之一致 (Agreement)

10) A variety of plants are for sale at the garden shop. (園藝店出售許多不同種類的植物。)

1.a variety of + 複數名詞 = many different kinds of +複數名詞， 故其後應接複數

動詞。

2. 注意：the variety  of + 複數名詞.. + 單數動詞：

The variety of plants at the garden shop is amazing.  園藝店植物品種之多令人驚奇。

 ** 比較：

﹝A number of insects use leaping as a means of escape from enemies. ﹞

許多昆蟲利用跳躍作為逃脫敵人的方法。 (a number of = many)

﹝The number of African Americans in majors has steadily decreased.﹞美國黑人在主

11) His friend and fellow author was cool to the idea of collaborating on a new book.

     (他那位同是作家的朋友，對於合作出一本新書的想法是冷漠的。)

1. 兩個可數單數名詞用 and 連接，若僅用一個限定詞 (determiner) 在第一名詞前

面時，須接單數動詞， 因它指同一個人或事物。

2. 若兩名詞前面各有一個限定詞時, 則須接複數動詞, 因它表示分別兩個人或兩

件事物 。

註：

determiner (限定詞) 乃置於名詞之前以限定名詞的修飾語；包括冠詞 (a, an, the)、

指示形容詞， (this, that;  these, those…) 、所有格的名詞, (the boy’s ; Tom’s …) 和

代名詞 ( his, our, your, …) 等 例

a. The professor and scientist is going to deliver a lecture tonight. 這位教授兼科學家

今晚要發表演講。

b. The judge and the statesman were invited. 法官和政治家皆受邀請。

但, The king and queen were greatly amused by the entertainment. 國王和皇后對於

12)  Not far from Main St. are other examples of the city’s architectural heritage.

   (城市建築古跡的其他例子，就在離 Main 街不遠之處可以看到。)

      

通常表示一個地理位置或地點的副詞片語，置於句首時須接一倒裝句子，故本句

之主詞是 examples 而非Main St‧原句為：

Other examples of the city’s architectural heritage are not far from Main St.

他例：

 Between the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans lies an unknown continent, America.

 = An unknown continent, America lies between the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans.

一塊未為人所知的美洲大陸位於大西和太平兩大洋之間。

At the dead end of the alley stands a chapel.  一間教堂在死巷盡頭。
