二. 形容詞 ( Adjective)- 形容名詞或代名詞

27)  We know for sure that this is the right place. (我們確切知道就是此處)。

Vt. (know …等) + for sure (certain) …確切地明白。有許多形容詞常接在介詞之後，形成慣用片語：

 in short  (in brief) 總之； at worst  至壞； call….for short 簡稱；at least

至少…

* Do not take it for granted that floodwater will drop in a few weeks. 勿認為理所當然- 以為洪水幾周後就會退。

28) Nothing is further from my intention than to speak ill of others. (我絕無意譭謗他人)。

be far from 遠離：It is far from my reach.  我夠不上。

1.或作 “決非” 解  (參閱 名詞 means 部分)

He is far from (being) happy  他一點也不快樂。

= He is not happy at all   = He is by no means happy = He is not happy in the least. 

= He is not happy in any degree.

War is far from over. 戰爭尚未結束。=War does not end at all.

                                       

2. Far be it from me to cheat you. 我絕不會騙你。

= It is far from me to cheat you. =I will never cheat you.      

3. far 之比較級和最高級為：

          

farther  (指空間之較遠)         farthest  (最遠的)

further  (指順序之進一步)    furthest (最遠離的)

At the farther end of the street stands a cathedral. 一座大教堂位於街道較遠之末端。

4. 比較級與否定句連用, 含有最高級意義； 故原句

= To speak ill of others is furthest from my intention. 毁謗別人是最遠離我的意圖，意即我絕無意譭謗別人。

= I have least intention to speak ill of others.

= I have no intention whatsoever to speak ill of others.

= I do not intend at all to speak ill of others.  

比較：

a. We have never met a kinder man than Tom 我們從未遇到比Tom更仁慈的人。

=Tom is the kindest man that we have ever met.  Tom 是我們遇見的最仁慈的人。

b. I couldn’t have been happier the day I figured out how to play my favorite CDs on my computer.

在我搞懂如何在電腦播放我喜愛CD的那天，我快樂得不得了。(couldn’t have been happier = could have been happiest)

【注意】：否定詞+比較級= 最高級

29) Mary is the more intelligent of the two girls.  (瑪莉是兩位女還中較聰明的一位。)      

 兩位中較…..之一位，用 the +比較級 (of the two) ；

It is the more appropriate of the two. 它是兩者中較合適的一項。

若有三位以上則可用 a + 比較級：

He is a handsomer of the three. 他是三位中比較英俊的一位。
