二. 形容詞 ( Adjective)- 形容名詞或代名詞

23) The use of English has become universal in world communication. (在全世界通訊中，英語已成全球性的語言)。

下列形容詞無法作比較， 即無比較級與最高級：

  universal  全球性的 English is a ~ language  英語全球通用。

It is a universal truth that man is mortal. 人有一定歲數，是普遍認

定的事實。

   impossible  不可能；absolute  絕對的 ；round  圓形, vertical  垂直的；~ clearance 高度限

制；horizontal  水準的；perpendicular 〔pDpn'd0kjDlQ〕 垂直的；eternal  永恆的；perpetual  永遠的；perfect完美的

Their love is eternal, and they are creatures of unspeakable evil and stuff. 他們的愛是永恆的，同時他們是說不出的邪惡與物質的產物。

eternity n. 永恆；來世  

 “From here to ~”  “從此地到永恆” 50年代著名電影；中譯「亂世忠魂」

曾獲多項 Oscar Award 金像獎。

*Are we so evil as to spend eternity in Hell? 難道我們是如此邪惡，以致永遠須在地獄受苦嗎?

correct 正確的；full 充實的； unique 獨一無二；但，

《可以在以上這些字前加 nearly; hardly or almost》：

 It is almost impossible = It is hardly possible.   幾乎不可能。

 It is nearly perfect. 它近乎完美。 ** 若為限制名詞，可用 near

The volume is a near-perfect example. 這本書是近乎完美的一個榜樣。

24) Her charming small pink face is just lovely. (她那迷人，小小的，粉紅色的面貌是可愛的)。

形容詞順序之排列如下：

         限定詞 (determiner) + 性質 (quality) +尺寸, 大小 (size) +顏色 (color) +名詞 (或ving)  + 名詞：

例：Let me take a look at those useful yellow boxes. 讓我瞧瞧那些有用的黃色盒子。   

          

The magnificent white monument is still standing there. 這座壯觀的白色碑仍然屹立著。

25)These problems must be solved in every means conceivable (這些難題必須用所有可能的方法解決。)      

             

最高級形容詞；all, every 和以 –able (或 –ible) 為字尾之形容詞共同修飾一個名詞時，以able (或 –ible) 為字尾之形容詞大都置於名詞之後：

a. The best terms imaginable are reached. 能想像到的最佳條件達成了。

      b. Everything possible is done to prevent further accidents. 能做的事皆做了，以防止以後進一步的意外。 但，

a. On the way home they drove at the highest speed possible    (=highest possible speed) 回家途中，車子能開多快他們就開多快。

b. To be heard over the noise of the crowd, he shouted at the loudest voice possible. (= loudest possible voice)

為了比群眾聲音高而被聽得到，他用最高的聲音大叫著。
