與數目字有關的慣用語
《All of his
books were lying at sixes
and sevens.》他所有的書很零亂地放置著。
at
sixes and sevens = in confusion = in chaos零亂地。(英文用六、七表示中文的亂七八糟)
*數目字、字母相關之複數形有時用阿拉伯字，有時用英文+’+s：：
a.
There are three 5’ s in the amount. 此數目有三個 5。
b.
Students were leaving the room by twos
and threes. 學生們三三兩 兩地離開房間。
c.
Nine out of ten
(=It is very likely), he will show up. 十之八九 (很可能) 他會來。
*Dot your i’s and cross your t’s. (寫i時要加一點；寫t時要加一橫線-喻「做事要小心與明確」-(Be
clear and definite.)。
*Mind your p’s and q’s. (小心別把p與q寫反了-注意小節)。
如指年代的複數：in 1980’ s或1980s (80年代，指1980-1989共一個decade十年)
