二. 形容詞 ( Adjective)- 形容名詞或代名詞

18) 有些作限制用法的形容詞，要置於名詞之後：

The notary public asked me to put my signature on the paper. (公證人要我在文件上簽字)。

a. notary n. 公證人 (專辨一切公證事務，在美、加等國可由私人擔任) 注意：辨別下列：

i. escrow n. 公證處 (專辦財產過；其地位如中國、日本、臺灣

~ holder代書公證人 ；~ period 經辦期

The sales transaction is pending  in ~  交昜正過戶中。

l  台灣的土地代書，很多人不如何譯成英文，有人譯為land；有人譯為attorney均不洽當

ii. attorney n. 代理人; ； Power of A~ 代理授權書； ~ at law 律師 (英國人

用 barrister)； ~ -in-fact 法定代理人

b. 下列一些 well-established phrases (固定用法) ， 習慣上，形容詞皆置於其所

修飾的名詞之後：

notary public 公證人 ；God almighty 全能的上帝

a poet laureate 桂冠詩人   ；Alexander the Great   亞歷山大大帝

from time immemorial   從盤古開天以來

但，CPA= Certified Public Accountant 會計師 (不可以把accountant置於

Certified or Public之前。

19) Prior to her departure, she told us the secret. (在離開之前，她告訴我們這個秘密)。

prior可置於句首或句中：

The house was sold ~ to auction. 在拍賣之前，房子已賣掉。

a.   prior (earlier in time, order or importance) 在時間，順序或重要性上比…早或優先，常與 to 並用, prior to = before

另 prior 亦可作限制用法，如, a prior claim to the reward   (對某酬報之主權宣示) a prior engagement   (早前的約會)

priority n. 優先, *〔如美國移民局給予各國移民配額的順序親戚關係分幾個~) top (first) ~ 第一優先為配偶，其次為直系親屬 (子女) ，第三優先為優秀專業人才， 兄弟姊妹屬第五，其配額 (quota) 多，但等侯時間較長。〕

比較：

一般電視新聞的錄影播出，常打出 “recorded earlier” (較早前錄製)  以與Live (現場直播)

相對。

b .prior 之相對字為 posterior (later in time or order) 在時間或順序上 較晚；亦可與 to連用

等於 later than.；另posterior 在生物學上指 “背後的”，其相對詞為 anterior  (在.. 之前)
