四、 副詞 (Adverb)：修飾：動詞、形容詞、另一副詞、

全句(前、後述)

26) 修飾形容詞的特殊副詞：

Left much alone, I found it hard to spend the holiday. (孤伶伶一個人，我發覺難以度過這假日)。

1. Left much alone,= (As I was) left much alone；leave + 人 + alone  (讓…人獨處; 不去惹…) 註：alone作形容詞用，不可用very alone.

2. 與 alike 同，應用 much  但，可以說：very lonely (lonesome) 很寂寞

比較：a. The two sisters look much alike.

      b. The one look very like the other.

      a. She is much afraid.

      b. She is much frightened

      c. It is a very frightening story.

27) all + n. + long = the whole + n. 作adv. 片語用 ：

Beautiful music is played all weekend long. (整個週末都播放悅耳的音樂。)

all day long = the whole day  整天；all weekend long = the whole weekend整周末         

但，「整年」須說 ： all the year round = the whole year= throughout the year

28) simply (絕對地; 非常地) adv. ; 原屬口語, 但現已用於written English 中。

               

a. 用於肯定句時， 可置於動詞之前或後：

They ~ told us what had happened.  他們僅告訴我們已發生的事。

He is ~ being fantastic. 他簡直太棒了。

S~ the best    絕對是上等貨。= Tbe bset or nothing. (賓士汽車廣告)

b.若用於否定句時, 則大都置於動詞或助動詞之前：

She ~ isn’t the person we want.   她不是我們要的人。

He ~ didn’t respond to my call.   他就是不回我電話。

We simply cannot understand why he left so early. (我們簡直不懂他為何這麼早離開。)

*比較  ~ ly + not  之常見之簡答句用法：

 Will he settle down for less?    他會賣便宜一點嗎?

Certainly. 肯定會，~ not ! 肯定不會  (但， not exactly 不完全是 = not precisely ) Of course. 當然會，~ not !  當然不會； Absolutely.  絕對會 ， ~ not !  絕對不會；Definitely 肯定會 ，~ not !  肯定不會
