48) nothing 在慣用語中時常出現的漂亮用法：

*His business in second-hand car dealership was nothing short of successful. 他做二手汽車代理商的生意十分成功。(~ short of 完全地/絲毫不差地；澈底的= thoroughly) 其他片語：

a. There is ~ to it. 輕而易舉的。

Cooking a meal for three of us is not difficult, there is nothing to it. 煮飯給我們三人吃是輕而易舉 (=as easy as 123)。

b. be good for ~ = be worthless 無用之才

He is good for ~, fooling around all day long. 他整天無所事事; 是無用的人。

c. for ~ = free of charge 免費

The pamphlet (brochure) is for ~. 這本小冊子是免費贈送。

d. N. ~ doing! (口語英語) = No way ！ 連門兒也沒有！不行!

e.  ~ but + obj. =only 僅僅，不過

N~ but a fool would believe it.只有笨瓜才會相信它。

f. to say~ of = let alone =not to mention遑論 (詳前say, talk,speak,tell 用法區別)

g. think ~ of 不把…當一回事

Joe thinks ~ of swimming 5,000 meter after running for 5miles.跑了五哩後，再遊五仟公尺，Joe未把它當一回事。

h. next to ~ = almost nothing 幾無一物：

With temperature over 104 degrees, he wore next to ~.因氣溫高過104度，他幾乎裸體。

49) late 的不同解釋：

 *A late decision, a lasting anguish. 一個晚做的決定就是一輩子的痛苦。(勸人當機立斷，早作決定) late 有不同之解釋：

1. late adj. 遲的、晚的             

*Mary is an early riser, while her brother is a late one.  Mary 是早起者，而弟弟則是晚起者。

*A 2 % ~ charge will be added to the bill. 百分之二晚繳的罰金將併入帳單。a ~ comer 晚到者；an early bird 早到者。

              

2.*late可作“已故的” 解the ~ president = the deceased president ；若指前任，則應用 ex-noun。

*John was once warmly received by the late President, Richard Nixon.  John曾經受已故總統尼克森盛情接待例 ：

his ex-wife 前妻 ex-husband 前夫 ex-mayor 前市長；今日美語一提到one’s ex, 聽話者就明白

是wife 或husband * Note:

在Rotary Club (扶輪社)中，把前一任社長稱為 past president

(P.P. +姓氏) 如：P.P. Williams 威廉前社長；C.P. (Charter

President) 則為「創社社長」
