89) institute / institution:

1. institute v.  in + stitute (set up) (源自拉丁文) 「設立」 ~  n. 

以藝術或科學為主的專科學校或學院

M.I.T., a prestigious school for science stands for Massachusetts Institute of Technology. M.I.T. 一所以科學聞名的學校，代表麻州理工學院。

~ 不似 college 正式；通常必三個 college 才稱為university 大學；除了 MIT

外, 在美國有名的學校，還有TIT (Texas I~ of Technology德州科技大學)；GIT (Georgia I~ of

Technology 喬治亞科技大學).等。近年來，有些新設大學喜以 .X I.T. 命名, 以沾

上名校之邊；如台灣有一所叫明志科技大學，其英文亦稱MIT。

「早期台灣一些外銷商喜將產品叫MIT, 乃Made in Taiwan也。」但，也有不加I.T.的理工

大學照樣有名的如，Cal Tech  (加州理工學院)；華裔著名航太科學家錢學森博士即出

身於此； 他在二次大戰前曾參予美國原子彈計劃研究，頗受同儕美國白人原子

科學家們讚賞。

(編按：從前台灣外銷產品，國民黨執政當局強追廠商加註：R.O.C.=Republic of China，

但外國進口商則喜歡M.I.T. ，其實R.O.C. 有人諷刺性認為是Republic of Casino或

Corruption 賭博/貪污王國之簡稱。

  

趣聞：錢博士在戰後-1950年代他曾想搬進一個unique (獨特) 的好城市—San Marino ，但被排斥, 民族自尊受損，受到種族歧視。後來在周恩來力邀下，乃毅然決然準備返回中國。 據傳離開美國時，他曾在美國海關受「徹底」搜身，因美國惟恐他帶有關「原子彈」機密返回中國； 他笑著對美國海關人員說：「所有機密不在我行李和身上， 但，全在我腦袋裡！」回去不久，他幫中國發射了人造衛星。更難得的是美國麻省理工學院當局，曾在錢博士生前親自派人帶勛章與獎狀到中國去褒揚他一生在科學上的貢獻。有人說美國人是輸得起的民族 (good losers)

  

institute  v. 作開始解= begine, commence, 但institute有建立事物使之實現之意圖，如to ~ needed reforms in the ministry. 著手推行部裡須要的改革，也含多方經營並常具遠見之義，如to ~ new management methods that saved millions of dollars實施管理新法，節省千萬美元。

2. institution n. 一個研究 (社會、教育或宗教的) 機構; 組職

The terms nonprofit, charity and philanthropy are sometimes used interchangeably to describe~ s and activities conducted on behalf of some worthy cause.

有時非營利、慈善與博愛這個詞語，被互換地使用來形容，代表某種有價值的

目標而進行的活動與組職。

~ 另作精神病院解= asylum。

比較：American Institute in Taiwan  (A.I.T.) 美國在台協會; 美國和台灣斷交時美方為延續與台灣非外交關係所設立之機構。(美方原中譯為「學會Institute 」但，台灣堅持用「協會- Institution」，因前者為學術機構; 後者則含政府機構之義。) 後來各說各話，美方仍用Institute；A.I.T. 之地位如同美駐台﹝大使館﹞

1. intense a. (感情) 強烈的 ；~ anxiety 強烈不安

= The intensity of silence was such that we could feel our breath. 如此安靜以致可聽到呼吸聲。

兩位侯候選人以競選階段不尋常見到的強烈手段，入侵彼此的地盤。

tense a. 緊的；緊張的

Patrolling the streets of Baghdad is a ~ job. 在巴格達街道巡邏是件緊張的差事。

* dense a. 濃厚 (密) 的； a ~ population 人煙綢密；* density n. 密度；the ~

of population 人口密度；~ fog濃霧；~ forest密林

 * devastating a. 破壞的；蹂躪的；全然的) ；~ silence 十分沈寂

2.intensive a .密集的，~ courses 課程；Intensive Care Unit =ICU加護病房
