11) It is true that she is beautiful but no one will marry her. (她漂是漂亮，就是嫁

不出去。)

 It is true that…….. but……= …, to be sure, but … (的確…不過….)

 She is beautiful, to be sure, but no one will marry her.

12)   An agreement is reached not by coercion but by compromise.  

          (他們達成一項協定，用的是妥協而非強迫，。)

 not….but 是成對的連接詞, 必須前後一致；本句為 not by….. but by…

**比較：

He came here not on business but for pleasure. 他是來玩而不是來辦正事。

 Not that I love her but that I am concerned about her. 並非因為我愛她，而是因為

我關心她。

 Not that… (=Not because +子..)..but that (= but because + 子句…)

並非因….. 而因……

** According to Rousseau, patriotism was love not so much of country but of its

republican forms and their traditions.                        

 盧梭認為愛國心並非對國家的愛，而是對其共和國形式和傳統的愛。

13) Everything depends on whether we have enough time.    (一切要看是否我們有足夠的時間。)

1.whether …引導一名詞子句， 可作介詞之受詞。that引導的子句則不可。

2.  whether…… or not, or not 可與whether 連用一起，以 加強語氣：

     I don’t know whether or not he will approve of the proposal.  我不知他是否會批

准這個提議。

3. Whether…. or not 亦可作副詞用，但須有逗號和主要子句隔開：

(No matter) Whether you are an American or not, you must obey the rule.  無論你是否美國人

，都必須遵守這個規定。

1.     in that + 子句：

Men differ from brutes in that they can think and speak.

人與禽獸不同，因為人能思考和說話。 in that =because 「詳第10 題」

** in that + 子句；有人譯為「在…方面」因其前面有differ…in…

5. ***注意：除 in 外，還有下列介詞可加that 引導之子句 ：

save that ….; except that…. ; but that….. (除….以外)

We know nothing about her except (save) that she was once in prison. 除了知道她曾

被監禁過外，對她一無所知。

但, We are interested in that he is a bookworm. (誤)

   We are interested in the fact that he is a bookwork. (正)

【注意】：第一句that引導的名詞子句，除save, except, but 三介系詞外，不可

用在其他介系詞之後。第二句則可以，因that引導的名詞子句與前面的the fact

為同位格。
