What 的特別用法：

《Part of what makes a human being a human

being is the imperfections.》一個人之所以成為一個人，部分就是殘缺。

what複合關係代名詞= that which，它引導一個名詞子句。 

No one believes what he says. 無人相信他說的話。

他例：

*a. The plan is to make January a critical month in what the President’s aids hope will be a 

turning-point year. 這個計畫是要把元月分變成一個重要的月分，在總統助理們希望是

轉捩點的一年中。(what引導名詞子句作in之受詞)

*b. Everyone has talent; what is rare is the courage to follow the talent to the dark place where it leads.

每個人都有天賦；難得的是要有勇氣，追隨天賦到它帶領你去的黑暗之處。

*c. What you carry with you says a lot about what you are.

從你所戴或隨身攜帶的東西，可以看出你的人品。

*d. A remembrance of what is past and an anticipation of what isyet to come seem to be the two 

faculties by which man differs mostfrom other animals.

回憶過去與展望未來，似乎是人類與其他動物最大不同的兩項才能。

*e. A man’s life is to be measured by what he does in it, andwhat he thinks and feels in it.  

The more useful work the man does, and the more he thinks and feels, the more really he lives.

The idle, useless man, no matter to what extent his life may be prolonged, is merely a vegetable.  

人的一生是以其所作所為、所思考、及所感受來衡量；他的工作愈

有用，他的思考與感受就愈多，而其人生也愈實在。懶惰無用之徒，

無論其壽命延長多久，也不過是平庸之輩。) (註：to what extent

=how)
