22) I am only
too glad to see you. (我太高興見到你。)
too +
adj. (adv.) + to + V (太….以致不…) / too….for + n.
The complete
New Yorker magazine will soon be available on eight computers
discs; it’s too good to
be true.
全套紐約客雜誌很快就可裝在八片CD出售; 簡直太好了
(**注:too good to be true…”好得…不會是真的..” 是一個常見的表達法。)
He
is too young for school. = He is too
young to go to school. 他年紀太小不能上學。
The
ship is too large for my taste, and some of the
elegance is missing. 這艘船太大不
適合我品味,且原有的高雅也不見了。
但,
only too +
adj. = very + adj. 十分地 ;若原句少了only 則其義為:
我太高興以致不想見你。 (顯然不合理。)*比較:.
The sound is far (much) too minute to detect. 聲音太小以致於查覺不到。
much too…to +V = far too…to
+ V (太……以致不…..)
比較:
a.
There are far too few math and
science teachers in America. 在美國數理 老師
太少了
b. too……not to + V.太….以致不會不:
She
is too smart not to see “Zero profit, zero risk.” 她太聰明不會不明白「無利
潤,無風險」。(= smart enough to see…)
23) He worked very hard, only to lose her love. (他努力工作反而失去她的愛。)
, only to+ V 表示與前述句有相反的結果
(注意:正式英文only前面須有一
逗點與主要句子隔開)例:
a. He rushed to the gate, only to find it locked.他衝到大門,卻發現它鎖著。—(本來
他期望可以衝出門外)
b. Ron jumped up and bellowed
at a bystander to call 911as the gunman escaped, only
to be confronted by
the police farther down the block.
當持槍者逃逸時,Ron 跳來並大聲向一位旁觀者叫他打911電話報警,想不到
卻在下條街遇到警察。
Imagine coming to this
culinary capital only to have
your Extra Crispy catered. 想像來
到這座烹調首府,卻吃到了KFC(肯塔基) 超脆的炸雞。比較:
** He went to America, never to return. 他去美國,結果卻一去不回。
