66) extent/ extension/ (renewal):

extent  與 extension 均由extend  轉成：

extend v. 延伸 ~ …to …

a. We want to ~ a personal invitation to you. 我們要個別邀請你。

b. They ~ a heart-felt welcome to you.  他們誠摯歡迎你。

c. This innovation ~s battery life for up to 20-25 % for reliable and continuous

  operation power. 這個革新可延長電池，可靠與持續的操作能力達20至25%

的壽命。比較：

*stretch v. 原義為伸展，但亦可作「延伸」解：

The economic pain is likely to ~ well into 2009. 經濟創傷可能延伸到2009年

好一陣子。

1. extent n. 程度；範圍

But given the ~ of the bleeding, a complete recovery is highly unlikely. 由於

*The extension of a contract is different from the renewal of a contract.* 一項合約的延長時效與

67) extended / extensive: 

 extend vt. 延伸  ；它有兩個形容詞：

1.      extensive a. 廣大的；向外延伸的 (指範圍)

*intensive a. 向內伸的；密集的~ care unit = ICU 加護病房

*comprehensive a. (向內) 廣泛的

2. extended a. 被延長的 (尤指時間) 目前有些長效型(~ release) 的藥品

亦用此字。

Talk to your doctor before using sleep aids for ~ed periods. 長期服用安眠藥物

之前，先請教醫生。

*a. Auto club recommended dealers give 15% discounts on ~ warranties and

aftermarket products.* 汽車保險俱樂部建議零售商，給予車主延長保固及

售後零件15%的折扣價。

 

*b. Based on ~ outlook for the weather, we know the forecast for tomorrow, or

days after tomorrow. 根據天氣延長日期之預測，我們預知明天或若干天後

之天氣。

 

*outlook n. = prospect 遠景；forecast n. 預報，在美國 weather forecast 分：

local ~ 當地；regional ~ 地區性；national ~ 全國性；international ~國際性。
