51) I am more than happy to answer your questions if you have any. 如果你有問題，我十分樂意回答。上句不可寫成：I am happier to…，雖happy是雙音節形容詞，但不可用happier，因它此處屬於「本身自己的比較」。

人+ be  more than happy to+ V (很高興做...) = 人+ be very happy to +V；若屬於兩者之相比則須用happier ：He is happier than I am. 他比我快樂。他例：

*America, it seems, was more than ready to embrace an alien invasion steeped in September 11 imagery.似乎美國很有準備接受，久揮不去的911外國人入侵的影像。

試比較下列三句：

a. He is the happiest boy among them. (與別人比較時最高級前須加

 the) 他是他們中最快樂。

b. He is most happy to help his neighbors. =He is very happy to help

his neighbors. 他十今樂意幫助鄰居。

*(屬於自己本身不同情況之比較，雖是最高級也不必加the。)

c. I couldn’t have been happier the day I figured out how to play my favorite CDs on my computer. 在我搞懂如何在電腦播放我喜愛CD的那天，我快樂得不得了。(couldn’t have been happier = could have been happiest：否定+比較級=最高級)。

「下列為形容事情、事物比較之進一步說明」：

He is more kind than brave. 與其說他英勇不如說他仁慈。

原句= He is more kind than (he is) brave. 本句若寫kinder是錯誤。

kind 屬單音節形容詞，若與他人或他物相比較時，則單音節形

容詞可以用字尾加 –er或 –r：

He is wiser than I am. 他比我聰明。

She is cleverer than her brother. 她比她弟弟聰明。但，

He is more diligent but less intelligent than his brother. 他比弟弟用功

但較笨。

若同一個人或事物的兩種性質比較時，一律用 more + 單音節或

多音節形容詞) + than…：

原句亦可用含“原級”的比較表示：He is not so brave as (he is) kind.

比較：more A than B = not so (much) B as A = less B than A 與

其說是B，不如說是A與其說Tom 是音樂家不如說他是科學家。

Tom is more of a scientist than a musician.

=Tom is not so much a musician as a scientist.

a.     He was more frightened than (he was) hurt.

=He was not so much hurt as (he was) frightened.

= He was less hurt than (he was) frightened.

與其說他受傷不如說他受驚嚇。

b.     This is less an admission of lunacy than a precise architectural description. 與其說這是

承認瘋狂，倒不如說是一種仔細的建築描述。

= This is more a precise architectural description than an admission of lunacy.

比較：

*But for some presidents, cast of mind is a central feature, the passion, much more than the plan represents the promise of the presidency. 可是對某些總統而言，脾氣是一項中心特質，情感遠比計劃，更能代表總統職位的遠景。
