17) 句型

1. all (only) the better /more +because + 子句 (或for + noun) ( 雖..仍…)

·       Note: 此處the當指示副詞 

    

a.     I love him all the better because he has faults.  (他雖有過失，我仍愛他。)

b.     Nixon’s ability to make bold decisions was all the more remarkable because

he was not by nature daring and by no means a happy warrior.

雖然本性不夠大膽，也絕非是位快樂的戰士，但尼克森有能力做大膽的決定就更了不起了。

比較：

We feel the better for the trip.   我因旅行了而覺得好些。

We will help you the more willingly because we know your son. 因認識你兒子，我們更願助你。

* So much the better. (這樣更好)

* for better or for worse 不論是好是壞

For better or for worse, they created a new era. ~ 他們創造新時代

2. not …the less because + 子句 = (不因……而不…..)

 =…… none the less because + 子句 (或for + noun)

 = …… but….. none the less = …..; nevertheless, + 句子

儘管他有過失， 我仍一樣愛他。   

I do not love him the less because he has faults. (for his faults)

 =I love him none the less for his faults.

 =He has faults, but I love him none the less.

= He has faults; nevertheless, I love him.

*He appeared none the worse for wear. 他不因疲倦而顯得精神不振。

** 比較：

他娶Jane 並非她美麗—(而是因為其他因素)。

He did not marry Jane because she was beautiful.  = He married Jane not because she was beautiful. (but because of something else)

Comp:

Because she was beautiful, he did not marry her. 因為她漂亮所以他才不娶她.
