7) rather 與fairly 之分別

These cats are rather like dogs in some ways. (這些貓在某些方面有點像狗)。                

rather 與 fairly 之分別 ：

1. rather adv. (有幾分) = a little = slightly   (輕微地) 常置於alike, like, similar, different等字之前，表示「比較」之意。

2. fairly adv. 相當地；完全地，不可用於「比較」 **

a. This is a fairly easy book.  這是相當淺易的書  (是適用的)

b. This is a rather easy book. 這是過於淺易的書 (或許不適用)

3. rather 有時表示「想不到」 (surprise) 之意：

 I thought the movie was funny, but in fact it was rather boring.本來我

以為這部電影是滑稽的；可是想不到卻是乏味的。比較：

【The sweet things of the world have to be patiently waited for, and do not usually come otherwise than drop by drop. 】

(世界上甜蜜的事物總要耐心等候；而且它們通常也只會慢慢一點一滴的來到。)

(註：otherwise adv. = in a different way；not otherwise than = only)

4. rather 常置於 enjoy 或 like 之前； fairly則不可以：

Most people dislike car speeding, but some young people ~ enjoy it.

大部分人不喜歡超速開車，但年輕人卻喜歡。

would rather +V, 請另詳助動詞

8) I don’t think that I shall ever meet such a nice man again. (我想將永遠不會再遇到這樣一位好人)。

 not….ever   = never

主詞+ don’t think , suppose, believe…etc. that + 肯定句, 含 “以為不會.” 之意

例：I don’t suppose that she will show up this evening.   我以為她今晚不會來。

We don’t believe it is true.  我們相信不是真實的。

ever用於肯定用法，另一節討論。
