四、 副詞 (Adverb)：修飾：動詞、形容詞、另一副詞、

全句(前、後述)

20) as well…的用法：

He is popular with teachers and students as well.  (他既受老師們也受學生們歡迎。)

as well = also 常與 and 或 but 等連接詞連用。例：

a. They gave us not only food but advice as well.  = They gave us not only food but (also) advice.   他們不但給我們食物而且給忠告。

b. Later that day, I learned that some of the great liners of the past wouldn’t have handled as well.

當天稍後，我明白從前一些大郵輪也無法處理那樣的事。(as well= either)

c. The truth is, we’re not just helping today’s patients. But tomorrow’s as well.

事實上，我們幫助的不僅是今日的病人；我們也幫助未來的病人。(註：

not just….but as well=not only…..but also；故意用兩個句子，中間稍為停頓以加強語氣。) 比較：

i. The Burberry trench has provided cover for military men and movies stars alike.  Burberry 戰壕不但為士兵們，也為明星們提供掩護。

ii. may as well + V. + as + V (與其..不如)；might just as well + V.  (參閱助動詞部分)

21) 否定副詞 如  hardly; little, never, etc.；或否定副詞片語，如，in no case;

on no account; under no circumstances, etc. 均作“決不可”解； 在句中的

位置：

 Little did we realize that things would come to this? (我們很少體會到事情會演變到如此地步。)

1. 在主要 動詞前或接在 verb to be (be動詞)之後     

a. We little realize that things would come to this.                        

He is hardly capable of performing that task. 他幾乎不能做那件工作。 

b. be 動詞+ 否定副詞片語    

      You are on no account to open the door for strangers. 你絕不可以給陌生人開門。

                                                 

2.  若置於句首，則須接倒裝句，即 動詞 +主詞：

Seldom (Hardly; Never) does he visit the infirmary.  他很少，(幾乎未；從未) 拜訪這家醫院 。

Under no circumstances are you to take him at his word.   你絕不可相信他的話。

Nowhere else can you find such a beautiful beach.  = You can find such a beautiful beach at no other place.  你在其他地方找不到這麼美麗的海灘。

Not once did the shadow of fear cross her face. 恐懼的陰影未曾出現在她臉上。

比較：

** 否定副詞子句 置於主要子句之前，亦須接倒裝句：

Not until people lose health do they appreciate its importance. 要等到人們失去

健康才體會到它的重要。

=They do not appreciate the importance of health until they lose it.                

= It is not until people lose health that they appreciate its importance.
