四、 副詞 (Adverb):修飾:動詞、形容詞、另一副詞、
全句(前、後述)
3) How
late is your store
open? 你們店開到多晚?
It is not closed until midnight. 到午夜才打烊。
l It is open around the clock. 全天營業
late adv. 遲地;晚地 He comes to class ~. = He is ~ for class. 他遲到上課. 比較:
lately = of late = recently 最近Did you see David lately? (你最近看到David?)
*Note: 一般言之,adverb+ ly通常含「引申」意義:下列是一些加ly與純adverb 之比較:
l. a. high (高的) / highly (高度地) :
*You should aim high while you are young. 年輕時須有崇高理想。
*The higher you climb, the
thinner air becomes. 爬得愈高,空氣愈稀薄。* Note: 第一個
the 是關係副詞 = to
what extent(達到甚麼程度)
第二個the 是指示副詞;= to that extent. (達成那個程度)
他例: More haste, less speed. 欲速則不達。
= The more haste you make,
the less speed you gain.
*Human beings are highly intellectual
animals. 人類是具有高等智慧
的動物。
highly –educated people 受過高等教育的人士;highly
-developed industry 高度發展的工業
2.deep (深地) / deeply (深深地) :
*The sailor is diving ~ in the sea. 水手潛入深海。
*I hear the
bell go deep down inside my heart.
我聽到鈴聲深入內心。(「不了情」之英文歌詞之一:The World of Suzie Wong- 電影「蘇西黃的世界」之主題曲)
*D~ ly moved by skillful performance, the audience stood
in ovation. 受到精湛表演所感動,觀眾們起立致敬。
*The dancing club remains d~ ly seductive. 這家舞廳仍十分有誘惑力。
比較:poignant a.深刻的
《It is ~ to witness a country in such a vulnerable
state of exposure. 》目睹一個國家處於如此虛弱的暴露狀態,令人感觸深刻。
profound (=deeply felt深刻的)~ grief,(thoroughgoing澈底的) ~ changes
3. sound 完全地;健全的 / soundly 完全地/ 十分地:
He is sleeping soundly.
他正酣睡。He is sound asleep. 他熟睡。
比較:
A sound mind dwells in a sound body. (sound adj. 健全的心靈寓於健康的身體。
*The missing child with
his dog returned home, safe and sound. 失蹤的男孩和他的狗安然無恙回來。
4. sharp 準時地 / sharply
激烈地;嚴重地
*The seminar was held at 6:00PM ~講習會下午六時整開始。(= exactly
at 6PM)
*New York home prices drop ~ly. 紐約房價嚴重下滑。
He was ~ly spoken
to.他被重責。
5. near/nearly:
It was nearly two o’clock in the morning when he got home. 他到家時
已快淩晨二點。
He is nearly (= almost)
drowned. 他差一點就溺死。*但nearly 不可用在否定句;almost 則可。
It is almost not possible to
convince him of the truth
= It is hardly possible to convince him
of the truth.幾乎無法使他深信這實情。
near (接近地方)
She came ~ enough to watch the baby. 她走近到可以看到嬰孩。
When told about the news, he came ~ crying.
當他獲知此消息,
幾乎哭出來。Note: come
near + V-ing= almost + V幾乎
