7) assure /insure / ensure:

- sure 前加上不同字首 prefix 有不同意義：

1. ensure vt. 確保= make sure ：

a. Careful preparations ~ success. 小心預備確保成功。 

       

b. Done properly, it will ~ the greatest legacy of all. 做得適當，它可確保最大

的遺產。

c.Our mission is to ensure that our members receive best service with every

transaction. 我們的任務是保證會員們在每一筆交易中得到最佳服務。

2. insure vt.保險；insurance n. fire~ 火險［life ~ 壽險)

a. Insurance costs more, covers less –and could be cancelled tomorrow.

保險費較高，卻涵蓋較少—而且保險明天又可能被取消。

b. Insurance is a product we all buy-just in case- for that rainy day we hope never

comes.

保險是我們都買的一種產品，以防我們都不希望發生的困苦日子的到來。

3. assure vt.  ~ + 人 + of + n. 使…確信…事 give confidence of..；

assurance n.

a. The mayor ~s passengers that the city is working to keep them safe. 市長向乘客保証市政府正努力維護他們的安全。

b. You must rest assured that everything will be properly taken care of. 請放心

一切會加以妥善處理。

c. These changes provide you with increased ~ that fewer uninsured vehicles will be on

 California’s roadways.

這些改變讓您更放心，將有更少在加州路上開的車子是沒有買保險。

d. With their children’s acting career ~ d, screenwriter Naomi Foner, matriarch of the Roberts clan can 

concentrate on her own. 

由於小孩子們的演藝事業穩定下來，勞勃玆家族女家長- Naomi電影劇作家得以專心自己的事業。

 

4. reassure vt. 再度使….確信； 使恢復信心   

                 

The problem is that his speech failed to ~ his worried supporters. 困難在他的演說未能使對他憂心忡忡

的支持者再恢復信心。

            

8) attention /attendance:

attend 

a. vt.  ~ + n. 出席 = be present at 例：~ school 上學；~ class 上課；

~ church 上教堂；~ a meeting 出席會議                                                                                                                                                                              

 b. ~ vi ~ on + 人 (侍候) = wait on；attendant 侍從者；attendance 出席，

與會；attendee n. 出席者

* After a year of flops and dwindling attendance, studios would do well to make

adjustments to a changing market. 經過一年的失敗和萎縮的觀眾，拍片場會

作些調整以配合變化的市場。

(註： flop n.-俚語，= failure 失敗)

Frequent attendance at class is required if you want to learn more 如果你想多

學一點，須要經常出席。

I was in attendance at (= present at) the funeral. 我出席喪禮。

c. vi + to + n. 注意 ；照料

He attends to his business with care. 他細心照料事業。

attention n.注意 ; 照料

pay ~ to the teacher’s teaching  注意老師教學。

(at driving) If you are outraged, you are not paying~. (開車時)如果你生氣，你就是不專心。(汽車後玻璃窗之貼紙詞句，勸人耐心開車)

The world of some leaders is all about excitement and short ~ spans. 一些

領袖的世界全環繞在令人興奮與短暫令人注意的事情。

** 比較：

The gentleman is paying his attentions to the lady. 這位紳士正向女士獻殷勤。

pay attention to + n  注意：*pay one’s attentions to + 人 (向……獻殷勤)
