14)   He walked on tiptoe lest he should wake the sleeping baby.   (他躡著腳走路，惟恐

吵醒睡覺中的嬰孩。)

 A. that = so that = in order that = for the purpose that為了…以便…是表示

目的的 副詞子句

b. in order that……. not …= lest + S. + should + V = for fear that…表示否定

“以便不會…”

Lest he (should) be found, he hid himself in the bush.  惟恐被找到，他躲在灌木堆

中。should通常可省略：

c. on tiptoe adv. 片語 (躡手躡腳地)

15) Put it back where you found it. (把它放回你找到它的地方。)

1. where = to the place in which….

比較：where = if   Where there is a will, there is a way.  有志竟成

Wrinkles only go where the smiles have been.  縐紋僅長在臉部曾經有過微笑的

地方。

China is a birth place from where kite-flying spread to the rest of the world. 中國是

風箏的發祥地，由它擴散到世界其他地方。

2. wherever = in, at or to whatever place  無論何處

 

 ~ there is a quarrel, there he is sure to be.凡是有爭吵的地方，他就在那。

(他好爭吵  = He is very quarrelsome) 

16)  Even if (though) I were starving; I would not beg for food. (即使挨餓，我也不會乞食。)

1. even if (though) + 直說句，表示 “though”：   

~ ~ it is cold, I am leaving.  雖然天冷，我還是要走。

  

2. even if (though) + 與事實相反的假設句，表示 “即使”：

 ~ ~ it were cold, I would be leaving. 即使再冷，我還是要走。

** even 是副詞； even if 才當連接詞用

17) You will be paid according as you work.  (你的薪水視你的工作表現而定。)                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               1. according to + 受詞 (名詞或代名詞)； according as + 子句  (依照)

*in accordance with + n. (配合)

2. in proportion to + 受詞； in proportion as + 子句  (與….成正比)

You succeed in proportion to your diligence. 你的成功與勤奮成正比。

=You succeed in proportion as you are diligent.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         ***注意：成「反比」用： in inverse proportion to + n. / (as+子句) ：

  

人愈富有，就愈不滿足。

A man is contented in inverse proportion as he is wealthy.

 =A man’s contentment is in inverse proportion to his wealth.

 = The wealthier a man is, the less contented he is.

 ** 比較：

A. His success is disproportionate to his efforts. 他的成就與其努力不成比例

 (或不相稱)。

  

B. Happiness consists in self-contentment. 快樂在於自我滿足。--知足常樂。
